When I was a freshman in college I decorated my room with Einstein posters.... one with the caption "God is in the details" (of course, on a different wall was the poster of the half naked diva holding a beer that read "man cannot live by beer alone").

Apparently not Albert's original thought, but thoroughly endorsed.

I have always heard it was attributed to Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
(b Aachen, 27 March 1886; d Chicago, IL, 17 Aug 1969). German architect, furniture designer and teacher, active also in the USA. With Frank Lloyd Wright, Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier, he was a leading figure in the development of modern architecture. His reputation rests not only on his buildings and projects but also on his rationally based method of architectural education.

It seems generally accepted that this was something said by the German-born architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) although almost certainly it was not invented by him. His obituary in The New York Times (1969) attributed it to him but the saying also appears to have been a favourite of the German art historian Aby Warburg (though E.M. Gombrich, his biographer, is not certain that it originated with him). In the form Le bon Dieu est dans le détail, it has also been attributed to Gustave Flaubert (1821-80). Subsequently, there has arisen the saying "The devil is in the detail" which has been described as a maxim of the German pop musician, Blixa Bargeld. He probably did not invent it himself as it is mentioned in Lutz Rorich's—´ Lexikon der sprichw?tlichen Redensarten (1994) - as "Der Teufel steckt im Detail"
