If I understand the First Amendment, it isn't based on giving a person the right to say anything they want. Yelling fire in a theater is the most common example I've heard. But saying things that are not true, or misleading isn't part of it either.

I believe it was created to enable the free press the ability to monitor and police the politicians. The founders wanted to keep the politicians accountable for what they are doing and to enable the press to be able to do this.

Everything in the Bill of Rights is designed to stop the government from over reaching and becoming too big. The Founding Fathers didn't want an all powerful, massive government. The First Amendment was to stop this from happening.

Eddie....what happened ? The way I see it ....it did not work...I see a massive govt. getting bigger and press that could care less....I do agree about the intent of the founders...I am sure they are spinning in their graves..

Yeah, they spun so much in the graves, they launched themselves into orbit. Not even the most fervent Federalist of the Founding Fathers would accept what has happened. Franklin and I think other founders did not really expect the US to last. It was a big experiment; They hoped the US would succeed but who really knew? Having said that, Franklin left a trust in his will that lasted 200 years. There were two trusts with a 1,000 pounds in each. One for Philly and one for Boston. The trusts finally ended in 1990. Pretty danged interesting that Franklin made that long term investment to help out the two cities.

I'm not going to read this whole thread, but I think this is all about him trying to boost his ratings. He's on a cable channel thats going in the dumper, he's trying to get his numbers up so he can try to land a better contract with someone else.

Not sure how completely destroying his credibility is going to do that. But, you have a good point about his intentions.

I will repeat something I posted before the school shootings - what you, the people of the United States, decide about the laws relating to gun ownership has nothing whatsoever to do with anyone who is not a citizen of the US. Outsiders should not even pass comment. I have lived in several countries, and whilst entitled to vote in them, choose not to do so because it is none of my business what the ctizens of those countries decide politically.

I thought I would check to make sure that Piers Stefan O'Meara as he was christened, is in fact English, and apparently he is, although O'Meara is not an English name and his father was Irish. His nationality may be, and probably is British -a birthplace entitlement at the least. English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish people all have the nationality of British. Those born in the Republic of Ireland, which I think, but cannot be sure, that his father was, are not British, but Irish. So, with a bit of luck, you can send him back to Ireland. From what I can gather from British news nobody wants him there - although the phone hacking police squad might be interested in a "chat down the nick".

After the early death of his father he was renamed Piers Stefan Pughe-Morgan by his stepfather and that is how he is known by his present name. Whatever his name, he is not the most popular of people in a great many places.
