Tax the stupid and/or the poor.

After the lotto, the State Intangibiles Tax on Stocks, Bonds, and Receiveables was 100% repealed, thereby ending the 4%+ annual tax on investements and long term savings accounts.

With the tens of thousands I've saved in taxes now, maybe I ought to go purchase a lotto ticket, even though I wouldn't know how to if I tried......

ABC’s evening news did a report on computer boiler rooms in Nigeria doing one of the scams that started this tread. They briefly mentioned a retired congressman, a lawyer and a surgeon who lost 350K to one of these outfits. Can you believe that people with those types of background would fall for such a thing? I guess greed overpowers common sense and education more than I realized.

One interesting thing on the report was that this is so common and known that there is a pop song with music video about the scammers and the money the dumb Americans send them.

I read somewhere a quote from a Nigerian government official stating something like "the 419 scam is only 10% of Nigeria's foreign revenue so what's the big deal?"

It isn't just stupid people who get rooked into these things...well, getting rooked into one does qualify for stupid I guess.

Spokane WA last year or the year before had a case of an investment counselor running a very successful business. Got into the Nigerian scam and put all her money into it, all the businesses' money and a whole bunch of clients' before she was stopped.

Here is a link to one of many sites dedicated to the sport of scambaiting. These sites detail techniques designed to waste the time money and self respect of the thieves that run these scams.
Warning; not a family friendly site. Scambaiting often involves tricking the scammer into sending a picture of himself holding a sign with a phonetically spelled, self directed, offensive statement. These pictures are posted in the "hall of shame".
