I am working on building a rotating bucket with screening capability. It will be similar to a product called a "Flip Screen Bucket". I have most of the design worked out, but my problem is in how to locate and arrest the bucket for the digging position. I see they have rods going to the bucket bearing location and am sure that this is used to arrest the bucket. I have never seen one in person to be able to see how they did this.

I thought of possibly an electric brake on each side, but this seems too costly, possibly unreliable and maybe too cumbersome. It could have been used in conjunction with electronic position sensors. It would be nice to find some off-the-shelf solution.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Thanks

1 - It may be far easier to just build a bucket with an open bottom. It would significantly reduce the complexity involved, and may be sufficient for what you need to do with it.

2 - Rather than have the bucket rotate, have a screen that flips down over the front and use the loader to rotate the bucket and deliver material to the screen instead of integral hydraulics. Again, simpler and more robust. More complicated than design #1, but it would be possible to relocate material using this option, option 1 would start spilling material immediately upon loading.

Those stop rods on sides of the rotating screen buckets appear to be pivoted out of the way by a cam on the back edge of the stop when rotating in one direction. In the reverse direction, the stop hits the end of the rod to hold it in the digging position.

Stones are the bain of my existance out here. I don't think anything short of that multiple rotation, pulverizing of clods and continuously falling material will really do. I have a poor mans (square tine) type rock bucket and have even tried the round tined, swedish steel, Houle rake and for my purposes and material to say they work at all, would be an exageration!

A screening plant would do, but who needs that on an ongoing basis?

I too think it is some sort of cam but would love a picture or diagram.

I too think it is some sort of cam but would love a picture or diagram.

Take a look at the pictures below I took from one listed on line for sale. The first shot shows the stop rod from the side. There is a pivot up front and I suspect a spring loaded ball pivot in the back (left side of picture). The stop rod is not fully engaged in the stop. The second picture show the ramp side of the stop that will cam the stop bar out of the way when rotating in the sifting direction. You can see the stop rod is sitting up on top of the stop which is welded to the side of the bucket. When the bucket rotation is reversed, the stop rod will spring into the side of the bucket and catch on the flat face of the stop.

Thank you so much for that information. I don't know why they need that rod. It almost sugggests some sort of control over the ratcheting mechanism engaging or disengaging. I was wondering if this thing just ratcheted in normal one way rotation. You would think they could just do this internally on each side without that rod.???

It does seem to be a very well built item.

The rod appears to prevent the bucket from rotating backwards when loading rather than relying on the hydraulic motors. Makes sense since it removes all loading stress from the drive motors, etc which would be the big dollar items to repair/replace. The stress on the components from just rotating the unit while screening can be calculated but the force the bucket sees during loading could easily be more than the hydraulic drive components for rotating can handle.

Maybe something that articulates & latches like a roll over box blade could work if you?

I was just looking at some You Tube Videos. Man, the side arms of some of those larger units seem to be milled out of SOLID three to four inch alluminium!

I saw something very interesting in a video with a case skid steer using a S 30 flip screen.

There is a wedge actually weled onto the outside plate of the bucket that engages the pawl attached to the aforementioned rod. It is much more crude then I had expected, which is good, but leaves me still confused. It looks like that rod takes all the digging force lengthwise, and also the pawl seems to somehow move out of the way, so the bucket doesn't in fact ratchet every time is comes around.

What about something like a drum that has a band that goes around it and a hydraulic cylinder that would tighten the band around the drum? Or use a disc brake from a car.
