I do like the disk brake idea. I have two large disk brakes on my dump trailer that I just plug into the tractor remotes. I tried to brainstorm all kinds of brake controller scenereos, but in the end, the lever on the remotes works fine! I paid a fortune for that brake kit however. I have to think on that but it seems like it would certainly hold well enough.

Just call the police and let them arrest it! LOL

It's near impossible to get them to even show up never mind leaving the cruiser!

have a moving pin that is attached to a small hydraulic cylinder and the pin extends in to a notch or notches that hold the bucket stationary, when power is applied to the hydraulic motor the pin is retracted by the cylinder, the pin could be spring loaded to engage and even a single acting cylinder tied into the motor circuit would make it automatic,

If you look at the picture, in front of the arm on the bucket there are two tapered wedges on the bucket with a space between them, I think the rod rocks a dog or pin (as I suggested above) and it locks the bucket in load,
with out a parts list or different view not exactly sure how it is operated, in combination or by it self (one circuit or two hydraulic circuits, one for the motor and one for the dog), there seems to be on each side,

BHD. Upon reading your idea, I liked it, but after thinking about it, I wonder if the shear forces would bend the bin?

All the sizes of Flip screens seem to have this same ROD! This is stressing me out a bit and has caused more then one sleepless night. I really would like to have one of these units or my poor mans version, but don't want to screw it up too badly.

here is picture of there excavator bucket, and there hold is a little different but basically the same idea, I looks like they may even be just spring loaded, but the bucket could only turn the one way, if a Hydraulic cylinder could be added to keep them open and could turn both ways then until the cylinder was retracted,

I am working on building a rotating bucket with screening capability. It will be similar to a product called a "Flip Screen Bucket". I have most of the design worked out, but my problem is in how to locate and arrest the bucket for the digging position. I see they have rods going to the bucket bearing location and am sure that this is used to arrest the bucket. I have never seen one in person to be able to see how they did this.
I thought of possibly an electric brake on each side, but this seems too costly, possibly unreliable and maybe too cumbersome. It could have been used in conjunction with electronic position sensors. It would be nice to find some off-the-shelf solution.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Thanks

Would this work? it's a much simpler design

Remu and Allu have a little different take on it too.

It's actually a really neat simple design! Maybe alright for digging into a pile and I do have lots of top soil to screen. But my most common problem is picking up stones and dirt that have been windrowed with a rock rake.

That video of the excavator was MOST usefull. It was the audio that gave me the best clue. You can hear the ratchet as it goes around, so this is the way I too will go.

I have two things on my side. One, I will not be using this thing in day to day commercial service and two, I don't have to build it perfect and bulletproof as one had better do, if one was selling the things.

I do have another problem. I was going to drive the thing on each end with a hydraulic motor and single #60 chain. So the first problem was how to employ an idler/tension adjuster when the thing goes in both directions? Doing my calculations, I realized that I would need a 50 tooth sprocket at the far end which was too big. Now I have to go in two stages which makes the idler issue, more complicated still.

I can see why machines cost what they do!

Fix a jack shaft on the back side bearing on each side, and cut a slot (slots) to adjust the unit back for tighter, some bolts weld the nuts to the frame so the bolts can push the bearing back or make a holder that can be pulled like some motor mounts are made, The motor can be done the same way.

taka look at the motor mount, and say the main frame is the side frame of the bucket, and the slide bar is attached to one of the bolts on the hearing housing, to pull it in the slots in the frame,

the second one is more involved.

if the reverse was on the non loaded rotation I do not think even using a idler for a tighter would be that bad of a situation,

also with some half links one could just adjust the chain for stretch and adjustment, with no moving of bearing or motors, #60 chain has a pitch of 3/4" so you could adjust the chain to with in of 3/4".
Notes on Sprockets and Chains

use a slow RPM motor you would not need a lot reduction on the chain drive.
