Ideas on Stripped Bolt Hole ???

I'm pretty sure you can find a 5/16X1/4 stud at a fastener specialty store; you can then rethread the hole to 5/16" and have the 1/4" end of the stud exposed to fasten the carburetor on

Rather than cut off the muffler and remove the pipe by splitting it and folding it in with a chisel and then having to find a new muffler, I decided to experiment first. Nothing to loose. Fixing it right is a better winter project.

The hole was 3/4" deep but not threaded to the bottom. I made a rough short bottoming tap from a HF tap I had ruined by actually trying to tap a hole with it. Cut it with a disc on the right angle grinder.



I was able to get an additional 1/4" of threads at the bottom of the hole. It is just starting to cut in the pic.



Made a couple SS studs from bolts and reassembled with some high temp loc-tite. It is a lot better than it has been in a while. Now I can mow and do a better fix at a more convenient time.

I think you just made a permanent fix. If it works just leave it.
