Tommy,

I think we just have a fundamental disagreement about the role of government. I am sorry about your injury. I can't imagine what it must be like.

My problem with it all is, there are many people out there who really do NEED the assistance. But it seems there are a lot more who are 'milking the system', which we all pay for. I don't mind helping those who CAN'T help themselves or who are 'limited'. But I can't stand to see those 'for example' who hang grandma's disability tag on the mirror so they don't have to walk accross the parking lot to spend their food stamps, so they can spend their cash on beer & cigarettes!

Personally, if I were faced with the prospect of losing my house the last thing that I would be doing is buying expensive toys. Rather than making payments on a RTV I would be trying to get ahead on my house payments. In the meantime I would put a pen to paper to decide if I really was facing the possibility of foreclosure. If so I would put the house up for sale and look to downsize. Knowing that people lose their jobs on short notice or supporting spouses die unexpectedly I would feel fortunate to have two years to get my affairs in order.

i can't agree with you more. i see it all the time a guy gets out of his car or truck that he just parked in the handicaped zone and practicly runs into walmart . when i help out with the young marines they put me in charge of the handicaped zones because i don't let anyone slide.lol they always have a few people that will try and pull a fast one but i tell them to leave .

well if your refering to my hpx well that thing will bring in 700.00 a month sometimes more if my sons on the ball. so it pays to keep it.and if i loose a workmans comp check i figure my hpx note is 185.00 so my hpx is makin a profit as long as it holds up it would be nice for a new one but house does come first but the hpx does have an income value to it. and no i can't sell the hpx and just buy a small struck because down here you have to have a lisense plate and insuranse so i would have a note there to and it would be harder to drive. i'm disabled i don't go rawhidin i do ride in the mud but i know what im doing and i take it slow i have a winch and all the power equipment on board that i need so i don't have to put out any effort if i get stuck.i have it disabled friendly.lol as for as down sizeing i grew up on this land and my mom and dad live on the land too it's all divided up into three parts but i don't wanna give it up until i have to.i'm gonna hang onto it until i can't pay for it no more it's family property i lived on here for over 30 years.whould you just pack up and leave it??? i went from a first class fitter welder .i am certified to weld on anything in the gulf of mexico (other than heli-arc) i built offshore supply boats i built cranes /offshore platforms. and i went from that to picking up scrap metals out of a dump .lol my back kills me but the best part is i got a sure fired ssi check atleast for 1200.00 and i got my hpx and it brings in more than i have to put out on it so thats a plus.just my luck they will close the dump down or another disc will go out in my back but a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do right. take care of your back cause whe it goes thats it.

Agreed. I'm sympathetic to anyone who has to deal with a disability, but in no circumstance should we by buying UTV's for people. What about every grandma with a walker and 600lb man who can't walk... shouldn't they deserve one too? Its our job to take care of ourselves. Its like people think this stuff is free. They might get a $1500 handout, but probably paid out 3x that to support the beauracry.

I'm with you Neal. However, I would change that just a little and say it's also our job to take care of each other. We are called by our Creator to do this. Uncle Sam, however, is not. His job is to guard the boarders and protect the weak from the strong. Largess is a slippery slope, with waste and inefficiency along the way and oppression waiting at the bottom.

I think some rather large assumptions and generalizations are being made here. First, no one knows this individuals circumstances and I really don't know what "the government bought it" means, there's alot more to this story. In other words, none of us need worry that we will be standing in line behind the welfare mothers waiting to get a RTV.

Without going too far off the purpose of this forum, I believe there are any number of situations where it is our governments responsibity to provide "largess", "welfare", "benefits" or however else you want to put it. I.E. when one of our boys ( or women,as the case may be) gets thier legs blown off by a landmine in Iraq, I'm okay with providing them with "largess". The widows of all the Police and Firefighters who died on 9/11 all continue to get workers comp benefits.....would any of us wish to deny them that? I guess this type of thinking makes me a bleeding heart.

Lucky for me, I got my middle class welfare in the form of low interest student loans which enabled me to get an advanced degree. Since obtaining that degree in 1989, the government got paid back in full for the loans (plus interest) and has been taking approx. 42% of my pay in the form of taxes every since.

Should the government hand out money willy-nilly, well of course not. But , like many things, its a matter of degree.

Hey Mike,

It's all academic. Your side has already won this battle. There are more largess programs in place now than anyone can even begin to count. And the list will continue to grow until there is finally a collapse. De Tocqueville told us how it would happen.

yes but as long as we have laws that say the insiuranse compnayies don't have to hold up to thier end of the deal and take care of an injuerd worker then there will be alot more people on ssi. now as for the ones that are on it and really don't need it they should be thrown in jail!!! but then throwing them in jail means we are still suporting them. do you think i like being on ssi? they call it a "fixed income" but to me you call it a "broke income" it would be alot better if the insuranse company would have to take care of all this and the worker wouldn't have to file for ssi .i bet the workmans comp insuranse company don't pay any premieums to the social security administration to help out.

but i still say if i seen a guy with problems walking or he couldn't walk at all and he needed something to get around on i would do my best to make his life easier (people don't choose disabilties) there are people that are pralyzed and they are finally getting out of thier houses and into the woods onf fields because of utv's why because they can be fitted with hand pedals go ahead and tell that guy he doesn't need to be out side or he doesn't deserve to have something to put a smile on his face. not to mention the kids involved .when someone gets hurt the kids suffer too they no longer have someone to take them places like the woods and stuff. . the goverment hands it out to the wronge one to quikly and the ones that need it well you just gotta fight for it.
