My wife and I honeymooned in Australia. Great place. Our only regret was not enough time there. We spent two weeks equally divided between Sydney city life, an RV rental in Cairns then a resort island on the reef. Wonderful time, great people down there.

As for you Vin, pick something you already like to do (such as golf, racing, baseball games, hiking etc.) then build a trip around doing that thing in different locations in the US. You'll have the familiarity of your favorite activity and seeing many sights all over the country at the same time.

I definitely like the RV idea. No better way to see the countryside and not have to worry about where to stay, what to eat and such. A real free spirit approach /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Actually, a trip on a motorcycle is an even better way to see the countryside. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif Now THAT's a real free spirit approach. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Admittedly, weather concerns and hotels come into play with my idea, though. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Gary, I enjoyed many long trips on my bikes, but my wife didn't care for it. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Overall, though, I'll take the RV. A former co-worker and his wife went from Dallas to Alaska and back on his Gold Wing in '85 and really enjoyed it. He celebrated his 65th birthday in Alaska on that trip. But on our last trip to Alaska with the RV, on the return trip, we stopped, in a light rain, to spend the night one afternoon many, many miles from any town at the top of a long hill where they had a pull out for trucks to stop and check their brakes. That evening a full dress Harley pulled in; big character riding it with a little one on behind. It was obvious that the big one had a problem; was sick, hurt, or something, but they walked off out of sight into the woods with the little one carrying camping gear. I got up the next morning, fired up the generator, made my coffee, etc. and I noticed those two people just standing around by the motorcycle. So after breakfast, I carried some garbage out to put in a trash barrel there and found that the big motorcycle rider was a woman /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif from Minnesota (or Michigan; I've forgotten which) and the little one was her 15 year old nephew, and she was down in her back and said she just couldn't ride any farther, that they were just waiting and hoping someone would give them a ride to the next town, so we did. My wife wouldn't drive our truck pulling the 5th wheel or I'd have ridden the motorcycle to town for them, but as it was, we had to leave it there. I offered to take her to a doctor or the hospital, but she said she just wanted to get checked into a motel, clean up, rest up a day or so, hope her back would recover, and then try to find a ride back to her motorcycle. And the 15 year old nephew said he wasn't getting back on that thing; that he was calling his parents to send him a plane ticket to fly home. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I think I was glad we were traveling in an RV instead of on a motorcycle. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Bird:

I really enjoy bicycle touring. One finds stops can be made almost everywhere to enjoy scenery the vehicular people can't.

Only drawback is inclement weather, a leaky tent or no proper means for washing.

Of course it takes time and is not for everyone. It's not something you just go out and do. There is much physical preparation required before setting out.

Instead of a full sized RV, my wife and I are looking to get one of those VW Eurovans. I think they used to be called Westphalia vans, but either way, they can be hooked up with all the amenities, stove, fridge, beds, etc. You get good mileage, important on those long tours, and it's not big and cumbersome. You can also pull into just about any parking lot, and nobody realizes that you're sleeping in there. Nice! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Unfortunately, they've stopped US production, which I think will increase the cost of the used ones. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
