If L3901 is too small... L4701 or L4060?

My opinion, not that my opinion "fits" in this bigger is better world. Get the L3901 and start working with it. Smaller tractors can get about the same work done, just a bit slower... what's the rush? Glad I got my L2800 for my 28 acres. Fits nicely, could I cut my grass faster with more HP, sure but you don't get the extra seat time :D

I've built a 1/4 mile road down to my creek, moved very larger rocks and trees with my grapple (a must have, also you need T-N-T and extra remotes ;)). As for a backhoe, talk your two closest friends into buy one each :D then you'll have one to borrow at all times. ANY tractor is better than what you have now...

IF you got the money to burn, heck ya, get the Grand L... but for me, outfitting the tractor to work (~ 35 implements) with the least amount of money was very important to me. Also, the tractor has never let me down - does all I've asked from it.

Between the two, L4060 hands down. If I ever get the opportunity I will be trading the L3301 in for a L3560. The Cadillac features are to nice to not get, and the extra weight would help put the power down. I was just at the end of my budget at the time with the L3301. It does pretty much everything I've asked of it, but I would love to have the HST+ and other "luxury" features on a grand L. But that comes after I get my hands on a good cart/wagon tractor.

I am not going to talk what brand to buy. There are many quality tractors out there in the size range you are looking at. I would suggest looking at other manufacturer's and get on them and drive them to compare differences. Buying a tractor is a big investment that you will have for a long time. I have 16 acres I am working on now with my NH TC40. Don't get me wrong, I love my tractor. I bought it new in 2006. It was plenty big the first two years I owned it. But over the years it does not feel as big. There are a lot of times I wish I had more HP. It has never let me down. However, if I had the money I would step up to at least a 50 HP range tractor minimum. Tractors look big on the lot but once you get it home on that 15 acres it will not seem as big anymore. I know an extra 5 or 10 grand can seem like a lot right now but it will more than pay for itself over the long haul. I agree with the others that have posted about getting all the extras you can, like independent PTO and telescoping links on the 3 pt, etc. Those small luxuries will make your life a lot easier.

I'm still contemplating what tractor to get for my 15 acres up in Vermont. Still considering the L3901 since it's a lot less $, but thinking about the advise I got here to suck it up and jump up to the L4701 I also looked at - more weight, HP, larger frame, etc. I was surprised the quotes I got for the L4701 are over $5k more than the L3901. I know it's a lot more tractor, but that is a big jump between consecutive model in the series. In fact, the L4701 is only a few hundred bucks less than the Grand L4060. Maybe there is a premium up here in the NE for the L4701 since it would be a good strong/small tractor to get in the woods? I like the L4701, but I don't know why I wouldn't spend a few hundred more ($5 a month) to get a L4060. Am I missing something?

My two cents, just bought a MX5400 after considering the L3901, L3560, L4701, L4060, MX5400 value chain. Very happy with it. I have a lot of hilly acreage though, and width was as concern for me. Test drive brought it home, happy with my purchase. I'm sure they're all awesome.

An L2501 should do everything you will need to do, including running a 60" rotary cutter. Need to get done bush hogging in less time? Then buy an L3301 or 3901 which have the same weight and lift capacity but more power to run a 72" cutter. My thinking is you'll get more done by going with any of the L01's (which'll do anything you need to do) and putting the savings toward implements, or a nice UTV.

However if money isn't too much of an issue and if the added weight, features, or HP, appeals to you go for the larger, and or or more deluxe machine. They'll all get the tasks done just some faster.

I had a L3200 & now have a L4060. I upgraded for the cab. The extra weight means it's way more effective traction wise. Because of the weight despite the extra HP it has a worse power to weight ratio. HST+ is super nice as well. Rarely needing to shift that clunky transmission & just staying in M range is great.

All in all I'm happy with my upgrade. The extra weight makes it much more effective of a machine lift & traction wise. Climate control & not eating dust or snow with the cab is wonderful.
