I haven't tried to do the math to calculate the exact distance, but it would vary, based on the height of the buildings on shore, among other things. I do know from personal experience that the shore disappears in less than 100 miles. I'm guessing you guys have a comeback lined up to explain that?

Thing about the illustration of perspective is that it leaves out how much longer the line of trees would be with high powered optics. There will still be a vanishing point somewhere there farther away, likely far enough beyond to see only tops of the trees.

Yes, when you're out of sight of land you do navigate to find where you launched and that's what I get when boating on the Great Lakes with 10x50 binos. btw, Haven't seen a meteor impact or aliens yet while navigating but they say there's always a first time.
