It's always windy here but 95% of the time the wind is going either east or south, both directions are away from the house as the umbrella is positioned. There is also a water outlet with a hose attached 12 feet away from the grill. The lowest part of the umbrella when it is up is over 6 feet from the top of the grill hood, and the grill at it's closest point is no more than 7 feet from the house.

Still, RobertBrown gives very good advice and I appreciate his timely warning for us to be careful !!!

Bill,
If you think Robert Brown's suggestion is more safety conscious than what I said earlier, it makes me wonder about you:confused2:
We all think, "that could never happen to us"
Send pictures of your grill on the deck, plastic surroundings, and soffit vent intakes to your homeowners insurance company and get their written guarantee that they will pay if the FD report says fire caused by grill on deck.

You asked in another thread to describe the characters on this site that were
not to our liking. The ones I don't like are the ones that poo-poo to the World Net via TBN not using safety chains on PTO shields, leaving FEL or 3pt equip lifted when the tractor is shut down, attaching PTO shafts to the tractor with the engine running, even if it has a clutch and brake and on and on when they say it is ok just because they have been lucky so far to the newbie's that seem to be asking for advise because of their ignorance or inexperience. I wonder what their liability might be for giving advice like that, or at least how they would feel if what they said caused someone to get seriously hurt,
I have nothing personally against them as they have a right to express themselves nor do I for you for your bit about not trusting anyone that doesn't disclose everything in their profile. I must agree with the opposite side of the house than yours however, as internet security for identity theft
is a real problem.
So form your own conclusions about the facts relating to your safety and the sources available to dispute them.

In no way did I say RobertBrowns safety suggestion is better than yours. About fire, any possibility scares the (bleep) out of me. Does anybody here recall when that home caught fire on Christmas Eve after the homeowners cleared hot ashes from the fireplace "because Santa was coming down the chimney" and put the ashes in a utility room?

My homeowners policy says they are not liable for loss, quote: "because of neglect of an insured person to USE ALL REASONABLE MEANS TO PROTECT COVERED PROPERTY AT AND AFTER THE TIME OF LOSS" (emphasis added)

So, if my wife leaves food cooking on the stovetop and it catches fire, AAA is not responsible for paying? If the hose on the LP tank decides to fracture when I am cooking on the grill and starts a fire, AAA is not responsible? If my neighbors K9 dog is running loose and chases my cat onto the deck and the dog upsets my grill and sets my house afire, I guess AAA is not responsible because I had let my cat out of the house?

Accidents can and will happen no matter how careful you are. Now, did the company that insured the house destroyed in the Xmas eve fire refuse to pay damages because somebody put hot ashes in the utility room? I can see refusing to pay for INTENTIONAL damages like if I set my house afire (arson) but as far as an accident goes...thats why you pay for insurance.

Haven't decided what to fix tomorrow, maybe some porterhouse steaks. Got 6 racks of baby backs on the smoker now but they are for next weekend. When the are almost done I take them off to cool, soak em in bbq suace and wrap in foil, then when ready eat take them out an finish baking over the charcoal grill. A few friends we have gotten to know over the years camping at the same camp ground all get together weekend after Memorial day to celebrate and remember the buddies we lost, just happens we are all Vietnam or Korean vets.

Bill,
Your (emphasis added) statement above, from your policy is normally referring
to your responsibility for taking steps to keep further damage from happening.
Example.. a bunch of your roofing gets blown off. You are expected to get it covered with a tarp to keep further water damage from occurring to the bare sheathing and from dripping into the house doing further damage to plaster, etc.
Many times it takes days or weeks to get all the roofs repaired in a storm damaged area so they are saying you must do or have done what a "prudent" person would do to protect the property from further damage.
Taking statements out of context from an insurance contract can prove much
more costly to an individual than taking questions out of context about something somebody has said as an opinion on TBN to chat about.
It also does no good to bug your agent with a bunch of "what if scenarios"
In the end, the contract is always the defining criteria.
This is off the subject of your "what's for supper on the grill" so let's be done with it. It may only have a positive purpose to get a few folks thinking about how and where they grill. Just be glad you weren't picturing one of those
big grease pots people dunk whole turkeys in, on your porch or I'd really be on your case.:)
