Trying to figure out if this is BS or not. They emailed me stating by the end of the month one of their satellites my service communicates with will be unavailable. If I don't take action, my service will be terminated. BUT, after a 2 year contract commitment I can have their new Gen4 if I act now  Wondering if this is just a ploy to get me to upgrade??

This is a fine example of when communication engineers, marketing, and sales staff spend too much time together. Doesn't it kind of remind you of the government?

We have had HughesNet for about 2 years. Two or three days ago, I received a call from a caller that told me that he was associated with HughesNet and asked me if I wanted to upgrade our Service. He stated that the upgrade was faster and that our current bill SHOULD REMAIN THE SAME. He told me that there would be a $125.00 upgrade charge, though. I told him that we weren't interested and hung up. I really don't think that he worked for HughesNet, but somehow got our name and phone number. BTW, we both have cell phones. I didn't like the CALLER'S verbal approach and that is why I hung up. Something didn't feel Kosher.

I have Hughesnet and they sent me e-mails for special offers to upgrade but they haven't said anything about cancelling service if I don't upgrade. Sounds like a scam.
I don't have any plans to get the Gen-4. If they would upgrade for free, maybe I would but I'm not committing to another 2 year contract and have service that's not much faster than I have now.

I forgot to add that the email also said FREE UPGRADE ($399 value) with 2 year agreement. I can understand them trying to sell an upgrade...but to tell you the satellite your on is gonna be taken offline?? Thats why I'm checking around if this is legit. I don't feel like calling them because you never get an english speaking associate and they will just try and sell the upgrade anyway.

We upgraded to Gen4 two or three months ago because our son is taking some online course and our grand kids use our system. Our speeds are much faster and we have a lot more download capacity. We occasionally exceeded our FAP under the old contract.

It is not free as you have to install a new dish, but there is a rebate, so we were only about $200 or so well worth it for us. We never got any pressure and I contacted them to initiate it.

Hughes Gen 4 is competition for Exede by ViaSat. ViaSat bought out WildBlue. The new Exede is way faster than the old Wild Blue or the old Hughes Net. My installation was no charge. I bundled it with Direct TV. Tech support is done in the US. So far no third world support. Exede is Ok for home use but would not recommend for business. If 4G phone service is available I would check into that. Exede is faster and gives more download gigabytes than 3G. This morning my download tested 6.82 mbps and upload 1.89 mbps. I am on a 10 gb per month download plan. $59 a month.

Has anybody with Gen 4 tried using VoIP with it? Magic Jack NetTalk or any of the others. FairPoint wants $46000 to run a mile of phone line to service my neighbor and myself. There is no cell service and probably never will be. We have Hughes and are wondering if we upgrade if the speeds will be fast enough. Of course Hughs is claiming it will be

In my experiences with VOIP generally connections that are not symmetrical (that is same upload/download speed) do not produce very good quality calls. You can hear them a caller because your download speed is generally fast. On the upload side which is slower they have trouble making out what you are saying. There are other factors involved such as quality of service.

We have poor cell phone signals in my area. Many residents have installed cell phone signal boosters to improve the quality of cell phone reception within the home.
