Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

gws-- I know you said it tongue-in-cheek, but the truthful answer is...Abolutely not. The term 'minority', as we think of it means someone who numbers less than another class, race, or sex in a population. That is most definitely not the the definition being used by those in power. Consider women: 51% of the population, but classified as a 'minority.'

What the term really means is protected class. Approximately 70% of the population of the US is now protected class citizenry in the eyes of the law.

Only us white males aren't. And under what circumstances can you imagine that those who enjoy such an advantage would voluntarily give it up?

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

We in Indiana made English our official language some time back. We now have TWO official languages and I hope your friend the legislator will introduce a bill there to do the same in Iowa.

Our second official language here is American Sign Language, long used by the speach and hearing impaired. Tell him about that and make him a hero with the speach and hearing impaired. Let me know what he says.

Hey Richard, your just following one of the most left leaning states in the country, we did the English is the primary/official language at least a decade ago. Just wait till you see what else is coming down the road if the rest of the states follow California. Your in for a rude awakening. I think California is the most employer unfriendly state in the nation. Don't get to rapped up in it though, you get nothing but cynical. I used too, now I pretty much get my information from select soureces on the internet as our local paper (Sacramento Bee) is dog dew. To say its reporting is objective is a laugh. If its so objective, how come at every single election it tells us to vote for the liberal democrats? Thats just a small sample of the diatribe it prints. I'm with you man, but your gonna have to relax and have a few brews, (I'm having one right now) it will run you ragged. rAt....

I am a minority by the way, German, Czech, French, Bohemian American, a supreme minority don't you think?

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

This is interesting. I was down in Mexico a few years ago, and one of my Mexican hosts expalined to me that in an average year, only TWO or THREE people were allowed to become naturalized citizens of Mexico. I was shocked beyond belief. He told me it is almost impossible for anyone to immigrate to Mexico and become a citizen.

Yes, we became a big, great country by welcoming people from all over the globe. BUT...they ALL became A-M-E-R-I-C-A-N-S and spoke English. They wanted to, and took pride in it.

Today I am sad to say, many of the people who come here from other countries, maintain their original language, and culture, and actually DESPISE most Americans.

I was talking to a Moroccan just this morning who works for a local computer firm. I asked himn what he thought about the Arab attacks on WTC. He said it was a "complicated issue." !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can you believe crap like this? I wish I had the power and authority to drive him to the border and throw him out. Well, in the coming months and years, if additional attacks come, as seems likely, we'll have to see who is an American, and who AIN'T.

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

I bailed out of the People's Republic of Kalifornia ten years ago. Smartest thing I ever did. I'm from the Stockton area.

Doc is right. What I love is how a lot of Americans cry when we travel to other countries and don't take the time to learn the language and customs. I never hear them whine about foreigners not learning our language and customs. Down here in Houston occationally we have culture clash and our local newspaper goes out of it's way to smooth it over. A few years back an illegal immigrant, I forget his age but it was over the legal age, twenty two I think, ran off with a twelve year old girl. Well, it turned out she was fourteen or so but the paper went out of their way to inform us all about how that is how they married in the small town they were from, the guy would go to the girls house and take her home and the girl's dad would get drunk with friends and cry about losing a daughter. Culture clash and we were supposed to be understanding. I never learned how the case turned out, I guess it wasn't newsworthy. I bet it didn't turn out the way it would have if you or I had done it. Another one that pissed me off. Our star Houston Rockets center, Hakeem Idontknowhowtospellit, is a devout Muslim from Nigeria. This guy was so devout that he wouldn't eat during Ramadan. His performance showed it, too. He was in his late thirties when he decided to get married. He imported and married a young girl...A really young girl. Twelve years old comes to mind, it was a couple of years ago. I know for sure she wasn't over fourteen. No stink made, it was the custom in Nigeria and of his religion. I would have figured that would have been a good time to run a series on the various forms of genital mutilations perpetrated on women that are also the custom in Nigeria. If he'd have been from Norway they would have ran him out of town on a rail. Believe me, Doc, I feel your pain! :(

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

I am with you Doc. When I spent 2 years in Germany while in the army, we were inundated with the dos and don'ts of living in Germany. This in spite of the fact that we were there to defend them from there enemies. We had to be so careful not to offend anyone. The part I don't understand is if we break the law we are declared unelgible for a lot of things. But you can break the law entering the country, then you are elgible for all perks and protections of our country. If we do something wrong then we can't get crap from our goverment.

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

We've got a bumper sticker down here in Texas that expresses that most eloguently. We're not much on immigrants either.

"We don't care how you did it up there!"

But I understand exactly where you're coming from. There's nothing more irritating than some country bumkin lost in heavy traffic. Unless of course it's some city slicker asking if cows really do sleep standing up and if there's anying more fun than pushing them over when they're sleeping.

That language thing for me is a nuisance too. I mean here abouts we have a town called "Nevada". It's a small town most famous for never recovering from a big tornado back in the thirties I believe. Everyone that's anyone knows it's pronounced neh vay dah. But jeez these foreigners come in and want to know if you can tell them how to get to neh vah duh. Heck, everyone knows neh vah duh is where fools and their money are soon parted. Neh vay dah is a sleepy little town with a post office, a volunteer volunteer department, and home of Community school. One of the best in the state.

I think you'll agree that if they can't pronounce a simple word like "Nevada" right they really don't deserve to suck in our oxygen. There's only so much you know.

Re: If you\'re causcasian you\'re in big trouble

I suspect that white people will be around for a good while after they become a technical minority. I may not qualify as "caucasian," as I am perhaps 1/64 Native American and a good 99% hillbilly--a protected class, I might add, here in western Appalachia. But assuming I do count as "white," I believe pretty strongly in the maxim "follow the money," and when you do, things look pretty stinkin' good for "us" (while I can't vouch for these numbers precisely, and tracked them down on a pretty darn liberal website, they speak pretty loudly even if they are off by a few points):

"Ten percent of the U.S. population owns 81.8 percent of the real estate, 81.2 percent of the stock, and 88 percent of the bonds.Ten percent of American households own 72 percent of the total wealth."

"One percent of the U.S. population owns sixty percent of the stock and forty percent of the total wealth. Two percent of U.S. wealth holders own 54 percent of all net financial assets; more than half of families had no financial assets, or owe more than they own."

Anybody have any question as to the skin tone of that top 10% and top 1-2%?

I am apparently in the minority here myself, but I think most people who come to this country want to learn English, and want to learn how to function in this society. IMHO, hardly anybody comes here to be a miserable destitute slacker. However, many are blocked by lack of access to learning resources, and it is pretty darn hard for me to understand why having multilingual signs or educational programs threatens my "majority" status.

I will, however, be sure to get an English/Texas-Texas/English dictionary before I head down to Harv's for welding lessons and some of that fine Twxas O2!!

Namaste'.
