Thought I'd pass along some information that may help someone else with the same problem.

The service man was out to fix a problem I was having where the 10amp ignition fuse kept blowing as soon as you tried to start the tractor. As is common with these tractors the battery has been leaking and the terminals were badly corroded. This was causing the starting circuit to draw too much current. He cleaned the terminals and installed a circuit breaker so if it happens again it will automatically reset itself.

As soon as I can find some time (we're building a house) I plan to install a sealed battery.

Andy, I had the same problem. Replaced the 10 amp fuse with a 15, but I like the breaker idea better. NH has a replacment battery for those that leak. It is still a vent cap type but seems to work well. I don't have a part # but it's a 60 month premium jobber.

Andy, I'd be surprised if the circuit breaker "resets itself." I think you will have to reset it, but at least you won't be caught without a spare fuse. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Actually, the automotive style breakers do reset themselves..

Yep... like a power window breaker..

Andy,

Put your foot down!! I don't know how old your tractor is but if under warranty demad a new battery now and not tommorrow. There is discussions of radiators, hydraulic lines and everything up front having to be replaced from that battery acid. Don't let them just clean the battery up because if he gets you by until your warranty is out you will have a bill of over a grand to repair everything.

Be persisted and get the new battery now. Mine was cleaned up three times before I said enough is enough, change it and change it now.

At the first hint of the battery issue, I took it in to the parts manager and said " I need a new battery". He didn't have the replacement in stock, but he gave me one to use until it came in. I had no intention of going home with the old battery. He was cool with the whole thing.

Thank you for the suggestions.

I do plan on taking it in to have the issue completely resolved. But right now I can't afford to give it up. As we get close to getting ready to obtain a CO for our house there's still a lot of tractor work to do /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif I was happy that they drove the 45 minutes to my house to fix it free of charge. They even cleaned off some of the dirt for me.

I didn't realize they had a better fix other than just replacing the battery with the same kind that will leak again. Thanks! When things slow down (hopefully they will a little /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif ) I'll have them replace the corroded hold down brackets, cables, and battery.

I believe the automotive type circuit breakers are a bi-metallic switch that trips when it gets over heated, and once it cools will close again.

ME TOO !!!

Yeah, they are great. I've got one in my tractor for the safety override switch problem, makes it nice to not have to try to get that fuse put in in the dark...

I can see applications where they would be great and others were a CB resetting itself might be pretty dangerous. In some circuits were the load may be high only for a few seconds (like glowplug circuits) I'd think such a device would be fine. In a lighting or accessory circuit, I think I'd want to be able to have the safety of resetting the CB myself rather than take a chance on it's resetting and reopening over and over.

In the case of our starting circuits and their intermittent overloads, that auto-reset CB is perfect as long as I don't have to wait 5 minutes for it to reset. I'd hope it would reset in less than 30 seconds. If it doesn't, I'm probably going to be taking the cowling off to see what the problem is. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I had to replace a 7.5 fuse the other day and I haven't had time to check to see which one that was. I's the sencond from the right as your sitting on the tractor.
My lights would all come on and the engine heater would cycle for the 3-4 seconds, but the engine wouold not crank.

The fuse was blown, and I replaced it and haven't had a problem again yet.

The book actually calls for one of those fuses to be a CB ... don't recall which one ... tractor came with a fuse in that spot ....but when mine blew I checked the book and found the CB (as mentioned here first), went to the dealer to get said CB, told them it was suppose to be a CB IAW the book, but the parts catalog on their computer was a little vague about it - it was there - but you had to know what you were looking for. Girl on the keyboard was new. Haven't popped the CB yet, but I'm betting it will take a couple of minutes for it to cool down enough to reset.
