Yep, circle of life thing; growing up on a farm, I did a lot of that too, now I'm the dad and my kids have kids.

Yep, circle of life thing; growing up on a farm, I did a lot of that too, now I'm the dad and my kids have kids.

I'm a city kid, and both my parents were city kids. Although both parents grew up in small towns. I love to hunt, which I think came from my Mom's side of the family. I do remember riding on my uncle's old John Deere tractor (this was in the early 60s, and the tractor was old then) driving it down his farm roads by Chimney Rock in western Nebraska. I was thinking I was driving, and he'd hit the left or right rear brakes and send us toward the ditch, took me a few vacations out there before I realized what he was doing.
I spent a summer out there after my freshman year at Mizzou and loved it.
My grandson is four now, I can't wait to let him sit on my lap, and drive the tractor. Ha (plus 3 more grand kids on the way!)
I envy you guys that grew up on farms. I know the work was very hard, and the days long, but it's an experience I'd like to have lived a little more.

Mo, you may want to re think the riding in your lap thing....
Many kids have died riding on the tractor with Grampa, and although you have fond memories, I am sure you would be devastated if anything ever happened to one of them

I've been thinking about that. Those old tractors were sky high (at least from my 6 year year old's perspective.)
Of course we traveled out to western Nebraska without seat belts, never owned a bicycle helmet, would stay out of the house on our own all day without mom having a clue where we were..
It would be devastating to have my grandson hurt, but we can't live life in a bubble.
I appreciate your thoughts though.

Yes, it was a lot of hard work, but a good life and gave us a good foundation and work ethic. My kids grew up in town due to my job, but we spent weekends and a lot of the summer working on the farms as I wanted them to know and appreciate hard work and the rural life. My wife and I finally built in the country. my oldest son lives on one of our farms and the other lives in a small development five miles from one of the farms and spends a lot of time on one or the other.

We can walk out our back door and fire off a few rounds, hop on an ATV/UTV, go for a walk in the woods, grab a tractor or just sit in our breakfast area and watch the deer and turkey; can't beat it and we are incredibly lucky.

Enjoy your grandkids, we have several and two great grandsons; love spending time with them.

We have a friend that my wife bought her Saddlebred horse from - about 3 years ago he let his boy ride with him while roto -tilling.

Somehow he fell and when the tiller went over part of his body it almost completely severed one arm and his boy almost died... I was going to let my grand kids go for a ride on the tractors with me, but this changed my mind...

You are also right - we can't live in a bubble. There must be a safe way to carry a child on a tractor- but so far i haven't worked out a way i am comfortable with- at least on my machines. now for those with cabs, or spare jump seats with belts may be a different story. enjoy the grand kids they sure grow up quick.

They sure do! Kind of scary how fast things seem to be speeding up, as I get older.
If I give the grandson a ride, it'll be without anything behind the tractor. Just like my uncle did. Straight down the smooth gravel road, at a very slow speed. Then I won't be able to leave the keys in anything any longer, at least while the little guy is around.

Just out of curiosity, is anyone else using a iPad to log in on this forum.
The annoying pop up ad about tickets pops up on every single page as you go through a thread.
You have to touch the screen to advance down the page. I continually open up other pop up ads by touching the screen to go down the page. It's really starting to bug me.
Is there a way I can donate to the website, to get a membership or something that wouldn't have all the stinking pop ups?
I'd pay to eliminate them. Really starting to keep me away from here. I've been researching implements, ways to use the 3 point hitch, and other general info.
Or, is there another website with this type of info, without the pop ups?
I like it here, but I must have opened up the ticket website 50 times..
Ok, rant over..

I'm using an iPad with the forum app. No pop ups for me. Don't know why you are getting them.

I'm just on safari. I didn't know there was a forum app! I'll be checking it out. Thanks.
Pop ups still on every page.

...Now get back on the tractor and with the implement on the ground back up a couple of inches and the lower links will snap back in and lock in their latches. now raise the implement a couple of inches off of the ground and get off of the tractor and get down and push the implement sideways with you body until it is centered with the centerline of the tractor. Put one of the telescoping stabilizers pins in an available hole. Note where that hole is. Do the same for the other side.

Doh! Never occurred to me to do that.

Yep, sometimes depending what the implement is just raising the implement will cause them to slide in and latch also depending on the top link adjustment. But I believe the back up a couple of inches method is the "approved" method.. In any case make sure they are latched before you take off to work.

Hey MoPops:

Did you get your ballast box yet? We're anxious to hear how your new Bobcat adventure unfolds. Please keep us posted.

Keep the photos coming.

Thanks.

The ballast box is supposed to arrive in St Louis later today. I can't pick it up until Monday.
I did buy a very used Mohawk brush cutter yesterday. I spent some time trying to get it hooked up to the 3 pt hitch.
All good, and relatively quick, but the PTO shaft seems way too short. I had the lower links in all the way, and the top arm in, but the PTO shaft was almost extended too far. It wasn't turning properly, didn't seem straight.
I guess I need to get a longer shaft.
It's a five footer, but seems to be in decent shape.
Having never owned or really run a tractor before with the PTO active, it's different. Just trying to figure out if I've got everything hooked up right. Ha

MOPops. how much overlap do you have on the PTO shaft?.. keep in mind that varies depending on where the 3pt lift is. Six inches is normally considered the bare minimum. Also if you get a new shaft, be sure it is not too long as it can damage your PTO bearings on the tractor. Here below is a guide. The PTO overlap is constantly changing by design as you go over the ground or back over a hole and when you raise it fully up.

Further info, you may be able to just change out the tubing, depending on the design of your shaft. It may require a hydraulic press to get it out. Most towns will have a driveshaft rebuilder who may be able to help you. PTO shafts are not cheap.

Great. It's a very old model and the driveshaft is open, (as in not enclosed or protected) so I guess I'll be shopping for a fix. I'm guessing I had a little less than 4" in there.
I figured out why I like a black and white tractor.
(See the dog, actually the previous four were Tri colored) ha

Here's a pic of the Mohawk brush cutter and the shaft. I was hoping to just extend the square shaft. However, the shafts I see at new implement dealers all look enclosed or something. Is this antique that unsafe?
