Great advice guys. As usual, more to it than I expected.....so I guess I should expect it. I hope to be getting started in the next few weeks. Will keep you posted.
Went by Sherwin Williams today with paint chips. When I told the guy the house was 80 years old he just said call the EPA and I can't really help with anything else. After I explained that the house had been stripped and painted 10 years ago he was willing to talk. We took some paint chips in and he said they were definitely oil. He recommended oil based primer with latex paint over that. I went ahead and bought the primer and some decent brushes. There is a 30% off sale right now so will probably go back later today or early next week and buy paint. Primer was about $45 a gallon, their best exterior latex is around $60. Seems crazy expensive but I'd rather get good stuff if it will last a few years longer. The 30% off will help and our total on paint and primer will only be around $300 since we only need about 3 gallons of each. I figure I'll be saving a couple of grand or more doing this myself. I hate painting but really need to save the money right now.
Good paint isn't cheap, but it lasst so much longer that you're money ahead in the long run by getting good paint. It's also been my experience that the better paints cover better and I feel that they go on smoother.

I just read the Meaningless Statistic thread and then noticed that you and I joined at almost the same time and have almost the same # of posts. Again, meaningless, but still an interesting coincidence.
