Re: I\'m might to have to shoot my pal (dog) :(

vmarc, I think that you find a lot of realism and concern on this thread. It seems that you know a bit about dogs since in a post you made in April on another thread you said:

" A dog is a pack animal . He wants and needs to be with his family to be happy and well adjusted. The quickest way to make a dog aggressive is to isolate him and let him be his own pack leader.Better to let him be with the family and learn his place.Any dog in the hands of a person who doesn't understand this can become a time bomb. "

But, I think perhaps you are a little too absolute when you say "any dog..." There are many, many dogs which are neither aggressive nor turn into killers when their pack leader goes on vacation for a short while. But some do. And, I hope you noticed that this dog has been rescued once and been lovinglyl cared for for years afterwards. The rescue option has been voiced, not ignored, by the dog owner along with the concerns regarding that option and his anguish regarding how to handle the situation.

We all need to let the owner be free to handle the situation his own way, having voiced our thoughts... this is America...

I note that you are new to TBN, welcome, and I'd suggest you add information to your personal information so we can better understand your background and needs when responding to your posts....

Re: I\'m might to have to shoot my pal (dog) :(

How close can one safely be with a 30-06? Practically point blank? I've never tried something like that (that close) with it, but since I do have it - IF I use it I want his death to be instantaneous.

If you go this route, don't get too close. Keep at least a foot and a half, maybe two feet distance. There is something called "flame cutting". Too close and your ought six will literally cut his head off. You don't need that sight burned in your brain - this is going to be hard enough.

Re: I\'m might to have to shoot my pal (dog) :(

vmarc, have you ever been with a beloved pet that was put down by a vet? It is not the humane death that is advertised. A quick shot to the back of the head is far better.

And sending a killer dog to a rescue or shelter is criminal.

Re: I\'m might to have to shoot my pal (dog) :(

I have just recently and the veterinary practice we use is very kind, compassionate and professional. I would try another if your previous vet is a hack. Taking one of my best friends outside and blowing a hole in his head seems barbaric to me and is a image that I would never forget. Shooting a pet should be reserved for times of extreme suffering when travel to a vet would prolong agony. As far as the idea of looking for a placement for this particular dog, it can be done if effort and honesty is dilligently applied. If it is to be killed for behaving like a dog, PLEASE Do not get another.

...have you ever been with a beloved pet that was put down by a vet?
Yes, horses (at our barn), dogs and cats (at the vet's office, different from the horse) and in both situations it was humane. If yours wasn't, perhaps you should find another vet.
