Yes BlueRidge, after 60 some odd years of owning dogs of all sorts,I have had to euthanise my share.I could hold them in my arms ,look them in the eye, watch the pain go and know I did the right thing. If your vet is a butcher, get a new one...I don't think trying to rehabilitate a dog is criminal. He might work out well in a home with no other animals, and owners who know how to handle him. Some rescues have experts who can evaluate the dog and make a decision as to whether he is adoptable or not.Killer dog?I don't think that was established as fact.

Texas, thanks for the welcome.I joined this forum for info and fun.Never thought I'd get involved in such an emotional issue. You took a quote from one of posts and used it to try to make it look like I said something i didn't in another.I said any dog can become a time bomb. Can being the operative word.Might, could, not definitly would.I certainly did not say that all dogs become killers when left alone.I didn't tell the poster what he should do.I only gave alteratives to shooting him.Pesonally I don't know how you can shoot a pal after giving him a loving home for years.(continued)

There are other considerations. Can you shoot the dog with out flinching?Pretty messy if you miss. How will you feel after it's done? How will your family view you if you do it?Fortunately it seems the owner is on the right track and is going to do right by the dog.My heart goes out to the family and the dog.

Update: I am back home from vacation and will be contacting rescues to see if we can find a better home for him.
I just can't see putting him in a prison where the only time he sees me is when I visit. It isn't fair to him.
He got away from my sister again and chased the shetland sheep - whether or not he caused the bleeding to death of the sheep that died is still unknown but he has been caught red handed going out of his way to escape his large backyard to terrorize the sheep. The great pyrenees intervened and protected the sheep without a fight. That pyr is worth her weight in gold. Well... silver at least. Copper? Ok anyway a great herd protectorate. Maverick was her pal too as a pup so I am sure she had it hard standing him down while he was worked up and had 2 sheep cornered in the barn (sister witnessed this).
I don't think he directly killed the sheep the other day - I think it was indirect and highly unfortunate.
