Re: I\'m NOT testing MY oil!!!

It will save on potential failues or issues down the road.

Example since I was looking at my Suzuki Gsxr1100 (motorcycle) test results. I had a problem with high fuel in the oil but I never look at the dates and test results. I switched to hotter plugs back in 98 to 99 time frame and my fuel % went to below 1%. Not bad from over 1.3. Overtime, it would have causes many wear issues (or more) if I did not fix the problem. Without oil testing I would have never known it.

The once per year oil test is cheap but priceless info for your tractor. ..NO MATTER WHAT OIL IS USED!

I will be posted my BX 1-year oil change this April...

Re: I\'m NOT testing MY oil!!!

To be honest for you guys that have a few acres and put a few hundred or less hours on your tractor it probably is a waste of money. Once a year or less would probably be more than adequate. Most of our tractors see 500 or more hours per year. Usually do oil tests every 250 hours. For us it's only $12/test as we buy mutiple tests.

Guys like Mike also use it to see how their oil is for extended drain intervals. We don't do that. We always change according to mfg. recommendations and have never seen any of the acid issues, oil breakdown, etc.

Re: I\'m NOT testing MY oil!!!

Just wondering, what do you get for $9 per test?

Re: I\'m NOT testing MY oil!!!

Mike: I checked the link and opened, printed and read the material. Thanks for posting; it was very useful and I now understand considerably more about engine oil analysis than I did. The rec oil change interval on my B7800 is every 100 hrs and I'm not sure that I would be comfortable doubling (or even extending) it even if the oil tested OK after 100hrs. If rate of degredation is not necessarily linear, how do you know that your oil is fine after 125 or 150 hours just because it tested OK at 100?

...But it might be worth having the oil analyzed every 2d change (@200 hrs) and keeping track of trends for the preventive mainenance information that it provides.

BTW, I realize that this represents a 180deg reversal from the thrust of my previous post; sometimes that happens as part of a "learning curve." /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I appreciate all of the information that you've supplied in your various posts on this thread.

Re: I\'m NOT testing MY oil!!!

Sorry should have said $12/test. I went back and edited it. We buy bulk from Blackstone and that is for the standard analysis.

Re: I\'m NOT testing MY oil!!!

I was the same way. I would not go over 3K miles when growing up. Then I started learning about synthetic and extended drains.

You know the oil is fine by; #1 knowing the past results and the basic for a bell curve graph. If the oil is fine at 100 and by looking at the data, go from there.

The key I feel is the results and what they are.

Re: I\'m NOT testing MY oil!!!

Here's what you get for a $10 test from OilGuard:

Pilot Sept 2004, 9980, 5000 miles on oil

visc100 11
water 0
Soot 0
fuel 0
glycol 0
FE 20
CR 1
PB 2
CU 66
SN 0
AL 1
SI 30
NA 17
MO 65
K 0
NITR 0
OXID 11.3
SAE 30
SYN 0
TBN 8.1

I'm a recent synthetic convert. For 25 yrs I used dino and changed my oil every 3000 miles. I now use synthetic in everything and have doubled my oil change intervals based on oil analysis. This 5K oil analysis showed lots of life in the oil, future changes will be in the 6000 - 7500 mile range.

Re: I\'m NOT testing MY oil!!!

I use dino and change my oil every 6-7.5k. Every vehicle we have ever owned has gotten well over 100k on it with no motor damage whatsoever. My last truck had 175k on it when I sold it. I save the extra money for the things I really need to buy. Why spend it on synthetic oil.
