Chris, of course it's discrimination, but humans discriminate in many ways; always have; always will. You do it yourself. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif You discriminate for or against the businesses you choose to do business with or not. You discriminate in selecting a mate. The list could go on forever.
So restaurants discriminate by giving seniors a discount. You know it sometimes works to their advantage by getting business they otherwise would not have gotten, and during hours of slow business. Us old folks usually go out to eat a lot earlier than the young ones. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Did you know that Lowe's (and other places, too) gives a discount to active and retired military personnel? Makes no difference whether they ever fought in a war or not.
If you're in a retail business, you quickly learn that your suppliers discriminate by giving bigger discounts to the customers who buy the largest quantities. So the small business pays more for his inventory than the big ones. So I'm not saying it's right or wrong; only that it's a fact of life that's not likely to change.

You can only hope! My view on getting older is that it beats the heck out of the alternative! Not getting older is a rather "dead" end proposition.
RE: stores carding. I travel on business about 9 months out of the year. Many states have now instituted laws that require proof of ID for alcohol purchase no matter how old one appears. Some chain stores have instituted the policy even in states where it is not required. My 84 year old MIL found it particularly amusing. She was working as a secretary at Wright-Patterson AFB while the other poster's acquaintence was fighting WWII. Why can't common sense be accepted even part of the time? It might be hard to tell a 20-something from a 30-something, but over that, I think we begin to develop certain tell-tale signs that we ought to be able to trust cashiers to recognize.
Personally, I'm not old enough for the senior's discount -- yet. I hope to accept my elder years as gracefully as I accepted middle age. I have some friends that bemoan every birthday. I look at every one as another victory over the Grim Reaper.

One of those blue collar comedy guys mentioned he knew he was old when no one laughed when he fell down. As a younger guy, when you fall all your buddies laugh and get a charge seeing friends fall. Now it scares him when a fall causes everyone around to run to help and give aid. They get concerned when he falls.

One of those blue collar comedy guys mentioned he knew he was old when no one laughed when he fell down. As a younger guy, when you fall all your buddies laugh and get a charge seeing friends fall.
