I'm under attack...!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [ Barn 1, Hawk 0 ]

Out in the barn and hear a really loud bang on the side of my barn [ like someone hitting it with a baseball bat ]. Look outside and a hawk is laying upside down, either knocked out, or moving his last few minutes left in this world. There is a dusty looking dent up on my barn about three feet directly left of the light. Hit hard enough to push in the metal and take some of the rollformed creases out of it.

It's a shame but it happens, had a big owl run into a mercury vapor light on the side of the barn,
broke the lens off, I found him the next morning too my surprise.

Wow. Miscalculated that fly by The denting of the raised portion of the tin is impressive. Hopefully it will be up and about in a bit. But that might have been to hard of a hit. Curiosity has got me now. Let us know if it flies away.

It kicked for a few minutes... but we'll see. Don't look too good as of now.

I have birds - robins, sparrows - fly into my windows now & then. Most survive - a few don't. Fortunately - never a hawk or owl.

The "crash" scares the crud out of me.

It looks more like a grouse to me, they are pretty stupid too.

Could be a grouse, never seen either close up. Whatever, I am going to plant it this morning if it is still there.... Sure hit the barn hard. Pushed the metal in about 1/2" in about a one foot circle and semi-flatted out some of the fluting in between the main ribs. Maybe it was being chased and got disorientated. I figured it was a hawk and diving down at something. We have a lot of them here, and eagles are getting thicker. Bet they would really put a dent in something...

[ we all got a little crazy doing that.... neighbor says that sometimes they get into the old fermented cherries up here this time of year. We have lots of pin cherry trees mixed in with the sugar maple and beech ]

Just an old barn 40X80... Think about building another one for storage...

That's a Ruffed Grouse.I have had that happen a couple times in the fall;the Berries/grapes are fermenting and produce alcohol.I had two fly through my garage door windows over the years.

Twas working at home years ago. I was sitting in the study in front of a 6x8 window with my feet up on the desk while talking on the phone. I had cleared a trail with the rotary cutter through the woods and the trail was "aimed" at the window by dumb luck. As I was talking on the phone, a hawk swooped down into the trail, flew down to ground level, popped up a few feet and was flying right at the window and me! I said an adult word or two because I thought that hawk was going to fly right into the window! :shocked:

At the last second, the hawk adjusted its wings and it swooped up and over the house. I had to change my underwear. :laughing::laughing::laughing:

Unfortunately, birds hit the windows from time to time. Most just bounce off but we have had a few that have died.

I had my doubts until I looked again; those are not the feet of a raptor. We don't have grouse here, at least that I am aware of, but I'm told they are finger lickin' good! Too bad you didn't identify the victim earlier, he could have ended up in the skillet!

Certainly not bird of prey, look at the feet and beak. Even small hawks like Kestrel and Sharp Shins have talons for hunting that you cant miss.
