I would find a new repair guy. It sounds like HE did not want to tear into a gear box.
Long story short is you may not like the price, but there has been very few times a green machine ends up useless because a part is NLA.
Before believing your local repair guy I'd log into jdparts.com and check it out for sure.
I dunno, but I have the same unit, same age. Just backed into a stump and bent under the back edge so the blades impacted it and actually cut a hunk away. Steel is too thick to bend back by hand, I'll have to have it heated and bent back and then maybe weld in a little extra steel back there.
D. --- shoulda taken some pics!! I'll bet I'm not the only here that would like to see a picture of that warehouse!
