I'm sure an overhaul would be cheaper than a new engine, in most cases that is. Labor costs might be high, but I wouldn't think they would eat up the cost of a new engine that you would still have labor cost to remove old engine and put in the new one.

Rebuild may be cheaper but after reading some threads on engine swap out to the fuel injected 28 HP engine I'm starting to think the extra $$ may be worth it? The 22hp has done evrything I have asked it to do but the extra power up hills would be welcome. Will they be able to tell me why the engine has failed once into it? Is it possible this is a heat related issue? Would the 28hp engine allow me to put a 5' mower deck on the 422?

Isn't the 422 a single piston steerer? Meaning the 425 has 2 pistons on the steering tub and the 422 just one? I would wonder how much stress upping the mower would be in that direction. also, what size mower you have? 4 ft?

As for the engine, cheaper to rebuild for sure but if you can get FI and more HP, could extend the life of your machine. Nothing wrong with rebuilt, though, if done by a good mechanic.

In my experience, the EH72FI starts better in the cold, and added slight (but noticeable) power gains (e.g., when mowing up hills). I don't know if it will allow you to add the 5' mower deck. The main issue is going to be heat. I had to route my fuel line/filter/pump along the side opposite of the oil filter/cooler and muffler. I also have another fan mounted to the side of the engine bay cover for more air flow, and wrapped the exhaust in an attempt to keep heat away. Even so, I still had the fuel pump go bad recently, which may or may not have been heat related.

I searched the first time around for a different, liquid cooled replacement engine with no luck, but there may be new engines available now. If you are handy, you might consider going that route, but if you are paying someone to swap the engine, than that would be extremely expensive due to the likelihood of customization, etc. The newer, liquid cooled Kawasakis are around $2k already without installation costs. At a minimum, I think you would have to relocate the hydraulic cooler from the inside to the top of the cover and plumb it, in order for the taller engines to fit.

Good luck!

When I bought my 2001 PT425, I asked about the differences between the 422 and 425 (which may be quite different today VS 15 years ago). They said they would NOT recommend a 60" mower deck for a 422. They said the 425 had enough HP to spin the big deck and keep it spinning in thicker grass. So, I'd say the larger mower deck would require more HP than the 422. You may want to ask PT about this.

As for the single ram steering, don't think that would affect the mower that much as its on its own wheels, except if you bump it out of float. There have been reports of the single steering rams ripping out, so that needs investigation.

You'll have to do some research about shaft lengths, diameters, hydraulic motor mounts, etc... if you decide to change motors.

If both cylinders failed a leak down test that is very odd. Leak down means rings and/or valves. More likely valves, I would think. A valve job shouldn't cost that much and could probably be done without pulling the engine. If it was me, I'd do a valve job, then a compression test. If OK, then OK. If not, you'll have to pull the motor to do a complete rebuild. I wouldn't think a valve job would cost that much.

As for Kohler VS other.... I only have experience with my Kohler. Mine started at 2 degrees F this morning with no assistance, starting fluid, pre-heating, etc... (knock on wood). It has about 600 hours, I think. Oil changes every 50 hours (once a year). Always used Mobil1 since first oil change. Just changed the spark plugs for the first time last year. Same for air filter. I just blow it out when needed.

If the Subarus are not starting in cold weather, I'd think most likely the starter is not capable of spinning it fast enough, or the spark is not hot enough.

Has anyone tried starting a Subaru in cold weather with a booster pack or jumper cables from a car or truck, and one shot of starting fluid before the first crank? It might be worth a try.

I spoke with Terry at PT late this afternoon. He stated that the PT422 with a 25 or better HP engine would run the 5' mower deck and the single steering piston would not be a factor. He was at a loss as to why the engine problems with under 800 hours and the dedicated(or overkill) maintenance that I practiced which was oil and filter change every 50 hours along with the hydraulic filter, always ran Mobil 1 oil. He then suggested a call to Robin and while I could not reach the person he suggested I did get some info but that's about all. They also were without an explanation for the problem as typically the problems I'm having were maintenance or abuse issues. They also told me that the 22HP Robin engine with a different carb and adjusted governor setting would then put out 25 HP? Also was told I should expect to get at least 2000 hours out of their engines...even in the hot Power Trac environment(he was familiar with our tractors).

The garage is saying they would have to pull the engine to do the work and if a total rebuild is needed it will be approaching $1500!

Terry also said the Kat's heater part#24250 has resolved the cold start problems for the most part on Robin engines.

I'm no engine guy other than I know how to maintain them, or at least I thought I did. I'm thinking if this garage is still stuck at that $$$ for a valve job that I'll pick it up and get another opinion.

A 2nd opinion is probably best at this point VS coughing $1500 on a rebuild.
Here's a link to a place called Brand New Engines....
Brand new engines
Many different Subarus of varing HP and shaft sizes. Most are less than or equal to that rebuild price.
If you could find the same engine with the same shaft sizes, swap it out, then either keep your old one for parts or get a shop manual, a computer in the garage, watch youtube and rebuild it yourself for a hot spare over the summer.

They also have a "repower" service to help you decide. Here's the link for that.

Thanks Moss, I also came across that site. I have also seen a few engines on ebay with warranty for even less. I'll be talking with my car mechanic later today and maybe he would want to help out on a valve job or refer me to somebody more reasonable than the current garage. While a new engine and a side project would be nice I can think of other things I would rather spend $1500 on!

Where does the heating pad mount, on the engine or hydraulic tank. An electric heater to heat up the intake manifold and cylinders is the best luck I have had.

For what its worth, I had more trouble starting my Kohler at 9 degrees today VS 2 degrees the other day.
