Impact gun to turn motor?

being as you dont have a starter, go with a motor and a belt or have someone pull it on a paved surface (probably easier than rigging up a motor)

OT:
I tried an impact gun once to turn over a 4 cylinder Volvo. Broke the bolt off the crank. Seems the impact wrench pounded the bolt continuously while turning the motor
lol, IIRC you can also snap the crank that way if you are lucky. that is why the counter hold tool is recommended when pulling the crank pulley, then you can use a breaker bar.

With an engine that has sat that long without running, it should be worthwhile to pull the injectors and have them tested. Call and find out what just the testing would cost. "Cleaning" the injectors will do nothing, unless you take them apart. That is something for experts with the proper equipment and knowledge.

Unfortunately, I don't think you are going to find out if the engine will run without buying a starter, unless it has provisions for hand starting. Some diesels do, especially older slow turning models.

There is a lot of missing information that would help people here to help you. What kind of engine is it? Does it have any form of preheating, such as glow plugs? How are you supplying fuel to it? Does it have a lift pump? What did it come out of, etc?

What kind of tractor is this? Make and model. Maybe someone can give you more specific info.

Just use a truck or tractor to pull it in high gear. When you bleed injectors, you have them just barely able to pass fluid. NOT line off of the injector. All that does is waste your time as it will suck air right back in after every pulse. Long straight road at 10 mph with the tractor in high gear.

Loosen the lines then "loose finger tight" if that makes sense. Tow it around for 5 minutes with the throttle full open. Then tighten the lines and tow it until it fires. Be ready to stomp the clutch when the engine fires up or you may ram the truck -- that can cause friction with the truck driver/owner.

An impact wrench won't spin a diesel. But it will snap off the bolt head. A drill won't spin a diesel either, unless it is asbig and heavy as a starter (VERY few are).

luck,

If you are certain it used too run and you have made sure the stop button is in/shut off solenoid in run position and you have no air in system . Give it a snort of Aerostart and give it a pull . It will run on the Aerostart and if all else is correct it will keep running .

Its at my father in laws house. Im going to give it a try pull starting.. I re-read all the posts and now realize how disasterous might have been. Thanks. Ive got my fingers crossed and will post my results later today. Sounds like great advice. I was told it ran fine when parked. Its only got 220 hours on the meter. It had a large plate on the front with a small hyd ram. Tractor was used in a bus depot to push non starting busses around. I removed all that stuff. I did notice that the motor itself was bare of paint and one of the freeze out plugs behind the pump has a JB weld or some other epoxy poorly applied. New starter is $450. and i can imagine what a pump costs. Rebuild or replacements got to be pricey. That is why i havent taken the plunge on major parts yet. These little Japanese diesels are expensive to work on.

Paul, an impact gun may do more harm than what your good intentions are...Personally, I wouldn't use one for this application...Be careful.

Years ago, I had a 3.5 hp mower that was very hard to start, I used to use an electric drill, with a socket on the flywheel, to spin it up. When it started, it was very difficult to remove the drill safely.

I would not consider using a drill.

Bad weather here in NY today. Dear old father-in law isnt up to it in the rain. Turf tires wouldnt do well either in the mud. Ill try tomorrow. I added oil to the pump today. It seemed empty. My father-in laws got a ford 1710 and he keeps that pump oiled as the manual suggests. Maybe it will help things along. Im definately not putting any powered tools on that nut. Its a 3cyl diesel ford (shibuara) approx 1980. Glow plugs and pre heater too. 4wd. i tried pulling it in gear but without the injector fitting cracked. I know that this is a separate issue but i ordered new glow plugs (old ones were no good). The new ones were different length from the ones i pulled out. Im going to give NH dealer a call on dimensions.

The biggest issue that I see using the impact is the damage done to the motor that you can't see. All of those violent pulses are transmitted through the crankshaft to the bearings. You will destroy the bearings of your motor because the pulses are more violent then when its running and you are not going to have the oil pressure that you would when the motor is running to cushion the pulses.
