Have any Canadian's here imported a tractor or in my case a Kubota TLB from the U.S.? I'm interested in buying a Kubota L45 or M59. There aren't very many used machines in Canada that I can find and the prices aren't bad when you convert in to CAD.

I bought my John Deere across the line down in Vermont back in 2006. I remember it being crucial that "Made in U.S.A." (or Mexico or Canada) appears on the identification plate otherwise duty is payable. Where are you located? There were a few other important details to consider in order to license the tractor for the road but that would vary from province to province.

I live in Manitoba we are not required to license off-road vehicles.

There are numerous Canadians on here that have imported from the U.S.

I have imported a compact tractor. You get stuck paying GST and HST ( or whatever it is in your province) when it crosses the border.

Many have gone over with a trailer, picked one up and came back. Gotta be clean ( little dirt ) and you get stuck with taxes. Not arduous but still work.

I used a customs broker who arranged transportation for me and it was dropped off near my home.

Have been looking at doing it again but the Cdn $ makes it challenging.

We aren't required to license off road vehicles here in Quebec either but to go on a public road they have to be plated or risk a fine.

In Manitoba, as long as you're not running it under a business, it's covered under the Home Owner Insurance. Farm use is not considered as commercial and not even a plate is needed.
If you have your farm operation registered under CRA, get an importer number. That way, you can import goods into Canada without paying taxes (PST in Manitoba). GST is refundable.
I'm not sure about the "Made in" label.

Must have changed the law since I inquired a few years ago.
The SQ informed me that ANY self powered vehicle capable of carrying a person needed to be plated by law.
In la Belle Province we have "P" plates for that purpose and you'll notice all tracked machinery sports the "P" vs the "W".
Wheeled loaders all need the costly "W".

As to off road, ATV's and snow sleds all need to be plated and insured but don't fall under the highway 'no fault' insurance scheme'

Another 'Quebec' quirk is that only stationary generators are exempt from fuel taxes. (hydro quebec runs many)
Don't get caught with off road in your CUT!

I've bought a few tractors in Canada and hauled several through Canada too...

I've never had to pay any duty or tax at all. All anyone on the border wanted going either way, was a clean tractor, NO dirt and that I had a receipt.

It's pretty much a wav on through for me, every time for me.

I assume, no import taxes may apply to used machinery.

You might want to check with Canada Customs first, before you even try to make a deal on a tractor. Mr.s Trump and Trudeau had a pissing contest and I think us little guys got the shaft. In other words, I think the rules have changed thanks to that pissing contest.
Assembled in USA isn't the same as Made in USA. You will still need to pay the taxes and maybe duty, too. A customs broker is a bonus and maybe you can get clarification from them about the costs of importing.
If you go to CC, then try to get a hold of the top dog at that branch, he/she will be right up on the rules.

as long as you are not on the road with off road fuel in your CUT I don't think you have a problem. As for registration my L4740 is plated as an ATV because I told the lady at the DMV I wasn't going on the road with it. I think it cost 40$ to register every year.

I think Piloon is right that all vehicles in Quebec are supposed to be plated but in practical terms there isn't any enforcement as long as one stays off the public roads. My International hasn't been plated since the mid seventies.

It's kinda funny here ATV/UTV's are required to have a license plate and of course insurance. However unlike some State's and I've heard some eastern provinces we can't drive our ATV/UTV's on the road. And farm equipment and construction equipment do not require any kind of license plate and never have as far as I know. My reason for buying an L45 or M59 is to start a business, I'm not buying one to play or to farm with. I will look in to a customs broker my boss used one when he bought his Hitachi Excavator a little over ten years ago when the Canadian dollar had some value to it.

I would only be concerned about anything that might require warranty. Generally speaking, Canada Revenue Agency only cares about their HST, and has NEVER even come out to look at what I am importing.

Between Trump and our PM on their contest. PM is going to have a tough time winning that one with his Female kit.

Yeah I'm not sure about how much warranty there will be on something that is used and we have pst and gst in Manitoba. For now its just an idea a friend of mine was pushing me in this direction and every time I look online for used machines the vast majority of them are in the U.S.

As a mechaniclly interested individual with projects, I can only say that there is virtually nothing available here in Canada. In fact, I wish E-Bay would stop telling me, that it looks like I am in Canada and would I like EBAY.CA? I would like, never to see EBAY.CA again as long as I live, but thanks for asking.

Has 3rd function, QA forks, and hyd. thumb
$32,500 USD......about $44,000 CAD.

call the cbsa and tell them what it is, they will tell you what you have to pay, last year bought a new mower in the us had to pay gst and pst on it but as i was importing it for non commercial use myself the tariffs didn't apply.

I still don't understand. Going into the US, they want to absolutely know if my intended purchase or pickup is for personal use. I am leaving money in the USA, what do they care about the circumstances? On the way back, Canada wants to know the same. Often hard to explain to them, that the stuff I am buying is for personal use. I usually say I live in the boonies, on a farm, and that seems to satisfy them. Every man needs a 15" PTO wood chipper! I was disappointed. They didn't even come out and look at my new toy!

The US guys only demanded to see my CASH even though it was within legal amounts. With an impressive rack of AR-15s behind them, they just made jokes about some movie, I had never seen, about a wood chipper. Cool, friendly guys, beyond the first questioning.

A guy I know drove a Grade-all quite a distance home from the States, going through customs. That would be funny!

"For Personal Use' is one key factor!
Personal duty free exemptions are quite high now for Canadians if U are 3 days in US.
Even the 24 hr exemption is nice and comfy now.
For personal use a used item can be accompanied by a hand written bill of sale! (don't exaggerate too much, like declaring 2013 Kubota L45 at $750.)
LOL, but if U do exaggerate a tad it is a smart move to price it to have to pay a 'reasonable amt to make them feel good'.

I know some things have changed but 'back when' I imported some 6-7 aircraft both by air and on trailer and roof top but I knew all the applicable tariff codes and had appropriate paperwork in hand.*

My last 'over the border' excursion was a 60" snow blower for my CUT and the border episode was about 10 mins. ( I think my hand written 'bill of sale' stated used tractor snow blower, as is, $250. paid in full!) They waived me thru! (OK, a little fibbing but that was B4 the new exemptions) I actually paid $400 but then the daily exemption was less than today.

*LOL, the best event was one set of floats that I purchased from the CAP (Civil Air Patrol) and a few months later I received an income tax exemption for having made a donation to the CAP. Problem was that Canada did not accept that exemption! however no complaints as my profit on that purchase greatly offset any exemption.
