Improving your welding?

Representatives of both sides are meeting in Brussels to hammer out a 72 hour cease fire and possibly longer term truce.

:-D

Isn't the quiet nice?

my understanding of static VS dynamic ( right or wrong )

static= placing something on a floor ( not moving .. just one steady weight applied)...

dynamic = a bunch of people walking across a floor or bridge ... or a roof during a storm with changing winds ...

or a trampoline ... stand still on it = static load ... start bouncing = dynamic loads.

A decent analogy but where it gets 'interesting' is in the application of the load. How fast do you apply the static load before it is considered dynamic???

As fast as you want.
It's more of a factor of how many load/unload cycles. Most things can take dozens of cycles before failure.
But when you have thousands and thousands of cycles, you should know if the loaded parts are being loaded past the fatigue limit.

Dragoneggs, great analogy as usual. :drink:

Arc, you lost this round. Admit defeat and move on.

Not for nothing, and I suck in physics, but if you are talking about a "static force" in one sentence and in a later sentence you go on to say that "force is a function of acceleration", you have created an oxymoron.

I agree, I never saw the loading discussion as an adversarial process, but more of a way to figure out a common vernacular that we all understand.

To me it seemed like Draoneggs was offering his expertise like ArcWeld and ShieldArc, among others do theirs, and also like they were trying to negotiate the differnt ways that loading is understood by engineers vs welders.

Just my $0.02

Technically, any "weight" is a force as it's a result of the acceleration of gravity. That's where weight and mass differ.

 Elementary my dear Watson. Physics isn't my thing, although I find this discussion interesting:thumbsup:

As I eluded to in post #264, it is not a simple matter of static vs. dynamic when it becomes applying the force or load beyond that of 'simple' gravity. It depends on how sensitive the object might be to the rate of applying the load beyond '1g' as to whether you need to consider it a static or dynamic load.
