Yeah sounds like you had way more flux than needed and heat if you were blowing the holes open, it really should not have taken but about a third of the rod you used to not only fix the end but also plug the holes. Brazing is an art that takes time to perfect.

You got it fixed that is the main thing

My father would describe himself as the type of carpenter who could build his own chicken-coop. My welding/brazing skills are analogous, mostly due to lack of practice.
