I have friends and neighbors that worked at Oldsmobile in Lansing and after the announcement was made to close down Olds was made attitudes deteriorated. Many people there adopted an "I don't care attitude".

We're looking at an Olds Alero, which is basically a Pontiac Grand Am with different headlights. Since the plant wasn't closed, I wouldn't think quality would be too much of an issue.

I was wondering whether the dealers would sell the left over Oldsmobiles cheaper to clear out the last of the inventory, or whether they'd want a premium price, expecting some Olds fans or collectors to want the last ones.

Oldsmobile offered special "Colector's Edition" models with unique badges and paint colors, etc. The ones we're looking at are regular models.

I would think they want to clear them out, since most of the Oldsmobile dealers around here have already removed the signs-- for example, the "Oldsmobile-Pontiac" sign has been replaced with a "Pontiac-GMC truck" sign. There was one area dealership that ONLY sold Oldsmobiles- now they sell Kias.

Wow Andy. You really have abandoned Ford, haven't you? I can't see any reason not to at least look at the Oldsmobile's, especially if the price is right.

I still have the Ford 8N tractor and the beautiful 1983 Ford van (I'm still trying to get Skurka to take the van off my hands /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif).

We went with the Cavalier because it was locally made, we didn't care for the Focus, and the price was lower than it would have been if I used my father's Ford A plan price.

We're still looking at the Ford Taurus, but she hasn't found too many other American medium sized vehicles that she likes. She saw the Olds Alero, and we found that there are still a few leftover 2004's left, so it's a possibility if the price is right.

How many models do you have to choose from?

For 2004, Oldsmobile offered only three models-- the Alero coupe and sedan, the Bravada SUV, and the Silhouette minivan. Since it's now an orphan, there probably aren't too many folks looking to buy one. I'm hoping that will be to our advantage!

I read somewhere once that there was one year in the early 1980's (I forget the exact year) that Oldsmobile was number 3 in sales behind Chevrolet and Ford. A lot can change in 20 years!

We're still looking at the Ford Taurus

I drive a Ford Taurus as my commuter car, and my family has owned 5 Taurus' in the last 12 years. We couldn't be happier with their reliability. From what I have heard, 2005 is the last production year for the Taurus.

P.S. I see you are trying to outdo LBrown with your quoting and posting /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif.

Andy........My brother has an Alero, I borrowed it for a few days while I was visiting in Florida in Feb. I wasn't really too impressed with it as far as comfort & quality went. I'd advise you to see if a dealer will let you drive it a day or 2 or at least overnight before you commit to buying one. He bought it too because he got a great deal on it..........All I can say is I'm glad it's his & not mine.........just my .02 Tom

Yep, this is the last year for the Taurus. We've had one in the past. I figure there will be some good deals coming up real soon. That's how we ended up with the Ford Contour that she has now-- 2000 was the last model year and we bought it in the spring of 2001.

Her first choice is a Ford Five Hundred, but they're not dealing on the price of those hardly at all.

My Volvo C70 HST was bought "used" with about 5,000 miles on it, it was the current model year, dealer took $14,000 off the price

Bob, you may say it was the price that caused you to buy that Volvo...

But I have no doubt it was a desire for another HST that did the trick, even if it was subconsciously... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
