This is a good discussion. And a thoughtful discussion. I've saw one poster take three completely different stands without even knowing he did. :)

I'm glad I initiated it.......

It's that time of year again when the school buses are out and like farm equipment, making many stops to pick up children and like farm equipment, drive with courtesy when it comes to school buses. When those amber lights start to flash, you know what is coming so don't be stupid and attempt to pass....

I read a few posts back the comment was about wide combines and such taking up most of the road.

Around here, we all use header carts so no combine goes down the road with the grain table attached. That is a recipe for disaster Widest implement I pull is my disc mower and folded up, it's just a tad over 11 feet wide.

You drive a combine or forage harvester or any ag equipment with a removable head on the road here in Michigan, you will get a citation and I suspect in any other state as well. You always have to break down any equipment into the smallest width possible to transport it, self propelled or not, don't matter.

I will say, I don't 'love' and tractor or implement. I love my wife and kids. The machinery is to make a living with. Machines aren't capable of returning affection. They are very capable of breaking down at the worst possible time though.

I 'like' certain brands more than others but, love, no way.

I'm sure you got the point. Just so you know, the "love" word has at least 7 different translations in Portuguese and every single one means a different thing. :)

Almost everyone trailers there grain heads. My friend's JD combines having folding 24 row corn heads. Even then the combine is 18ft wide coming down the road. No way to escape that. That's the width of the combine chassis. Here's a couple pics. The first is a crappy pic of one with the corn head folded. Second is an example of the size of their operation. Note that the center pivot 4wd tractors pulling the grain cart's are 475HP JDs. The Carts hold 1,300 bushels of grain. They look small amongst the combines. :)

I got your point and totally understand it. I'm the same way. Nothing sweeter than watching a finely designed piece of machinery doing what it's designed to do in the hands of a skilled operator. I love watching that!!!

Why do they need to slow down?

In all honesty the people who have moved in from outside areas are actually better and safer drivers than the locals who have had thier families here for generations!

I often find that those who immediately assume everyone needs to slow down are such poor drivers that I wouldn稚 trust them to drive that little red wagon I used to haul hay in as a toddler!

And the locals, who were there first, must live by your rules. Most of the new outside people I know of are traveling on roads with a posted speed of 35 and doing 70+. We have one local road here between 2 highways that people use as a short cut. The locals on that road know the speed limit. The outsiders only see it as a short cut. At least 4 to 5 wrecks a week on this road. A few years ago a woman that had lived here for over 50 years slowed to turn into her drive and hit by a semi on this 2 lane country road doing over 65. She was killed.
