Not cash only. Lots of checks, including counter checks. A real nightmare for the attendant.

I forgot about those, I forget the brand we took, I think it was ComChecks. But, yeah, we had to call them in to get verification. With credit cards we had the book with the bad numbers in it you had to look up well before computerization. I worked in a station off the freeway where I worked a lot of graveyards way back in '83-'84. A lot of good memories and one not so good. I got punched in the face for being out of matches, lol.

In the early summer of 1956, my Dad bought a Texaco service station in Marietta, OK. It was mostly a cash business and the only credit cards I remember were Texaco credit cards. Then in November, he sold that station and we moved to Plano, TX, where he bought a Mobil service station. Again, the only credit cards I remember were Mobil credit cards. And in fact, my own first credit card was a Mobil card. And yep, once a month we got a list of bad numbers, but we never had to call for authorization. One night, after dark, a fellow came in and needed one tire, so I sold him one. Since most people complained about the price of Mobil tires, I was a little surprised that he didn't say a thing about the price, except "OK". Sure enough, a few days later, an investigator from Mobil showed up. That card was stolen, but it wasn't yet on the list the night I took it, so we didn't have to take the loss. And that was the only bad card we ever got.

Fortunately that is one problem we don't have here as all pumps in the UK have petrol and diesel.

I hear ya on the shopping.. my peeve also. I on the other had am maybe too caring, as Ive been known to hop back into the car and take off before my wife is ready.lol But to not move and then shop is just plain stupidity or arrogance..Another thing to consider is the size of the car or truck and how much fuel they will take on. I have a small car, and several time have zipped in and fulled and left before one person has even filled half the tank.I gues this would hold true with when you think someone is going to pump and go fast but then reaches in and takes out several cans lol I too try to get gas after 9 am if possible.. (less people here)
Okay I fill up 5-7 days a week. I know that around 7-8 there is going to be a line at the station I go to that has 18 pumps, six of which are combo pumps. More than half the time I have my 28' gn trailer with me. There are certain pumps that are easier for me to get to and out of. I can patiently wait my turn, but I guarantee my blood will boil if the pumps are busy and somebody is parked at the pumps while doing their grocery shopping.

As I get past middle age, my collective experience says there are more rude people than their used to be,

world population is rising. assuming similar proportion of rude to non rude people.. you are correct. more rude people than there used to be. :)

The management can...

thus when i show up.. it's more or less outta my hands as to what the real level of fuel in a tank is.. or my route, and time table.

I hate quick change places for that very reason. I think they use impact wrenches doing oil changes. I have seen and heard many times about oil plugs, and also filters on WAY TOO TIGHT.

Not on any of my vehicles, but on relatives that dont do their own oil change all the time. They go to the quick shops, then next time try it themselves. End up calling me cause the oil plug is either rounded, or sooo tight you need a 1/2" breaker bar.

My FIL's truck, they put the plug on so tight, next time he went to do it, it twisted the nut off that is welded inside the pan. Ended up costing him a new pan.

In all of my vehicles, and ALWAYS doing my own changes, I have never needed special tools to remove an oil filter, and I have NEVER had any oil plug related issues. always come back out easy with a simple ratchet wrench and not too much effort.

after that episode I found time to maintaine the wifes truck permanently... i hope they like that 5$ charge.. it cost them business..

How about rude people at the gas dock at the Marina....We had a 46 foot houseboat and would have to slowly manuver it in to the dock to buy fuel...we had to go slow since we were so big...takes time to stop at the dock...I can't tell you how many times we would almost be at the dock and some small ski boat or fishing boat would speed it front of us and tie up and I had to immediately turn away and do a 360 to approach again....there was nothing we could do ...So we finally started calling the dock attendant and telling him were 3 minutes out and he would keep the end dock clear so we could fuel and leave....People were jerks and they knew what they did to us and laughed....little did they know if I had been new at piloting the boat they could have been killed with their little stunt.
