What I like to refer to as the "curse of the engineer" has prevented me from purchasing a welder myself - despite taking a class last fall on how to use one.

The curse of the engineer is knowing that there is a better/bigger/sexier tool out there to do whatever job you are working on at the time. The curse has stripped untold dollars out of my wallet and has caused many a night in "the doghouse".

I haven't bought a welder yet, because I want the one that will "Do it all" - ie TIG - all metals, all thicknesses, cheaper than getting a Stick only for heavy metal, and a MIG for thinner. I don't ever plan on doing produciton work, so I can live w/o the speed of the MIG.

Since the TIG is expensive ($1500 +) I've had a hard time saving my pennies up. Other, less costly, tools keep showing up /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

If I were buying a stick only, the curse would require the Miller Thunderbolt XL 200-300. AC/DC welder. Cost $700 /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Hey that's my buzz-box! Or at least there must be about a zillion of them out there that all look the same. Years ago I took some EMT conduit and bent an inverted U for a handy handle on mine. Sure saves the old back when you need to move it around the barn to use it.

Hey, that's my buzz box too. I have a cart but no handle. It is a heavy bugger to lift up into the pickup bed. Mine was free from a dead guy's garage, with the widow's blessing of course.

I have a buss box like that I bought years ago.

I Bought it through a Mail order catalog for $88.00. It came with a helmet, wheel kit, and a assortment of welding rods.

The rod had colored dots to tell what rod you where using.
That's how long ago I got the thing.
