Spoke to the manufacturer of the gear box this morning and learned that the two halves of the case are epoxied together. That eliminates the possibility of swapping top for bottom of the case halves. Engineering suggested that the holes be drilled out and re-tapped to 3/8-16 thread if re tapping doesn't work out satisfactory. Also learned that the grease that they use is Amoco Perma Gear 220. I asked about checking the gear box for lube quantity and learned that the inspection plug is a self tapping type of plug that is put in with a sealant. Each time it is opened and reinserted, it will go farther into the case. They suggested that it not be removed unless there is a indication of leaking and that the factory fill of grease is good for many hundreds of hours of use before needing to be changed. For all practical purposes, it is filled for life. The Kubota manual suggests changing the gear lube every 100 hours, so you can decide what you think is best for you and your machine. Personally, I will take the factory suggestion and let it go ..... that is, if I ever cut that much grass before the rest of the machine wears out... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I re-tapped all the holes today and it seems that they might have originally been tapped with a worn out tap. It appears that once I get the longer bolts, everything will go back together with out any more problems.
The name of the company that built the grass catcher is Everride. They make ZTR Commercial lawn mowers. Here is a link to there web page.
