Interesting concept, but would it not be easier and less time consuming to use chains? unless you left them in year round....

I put screws into the lugs of the R1s on my Gravely. This was just before I got the JD 4010. Never really got to try the Gravely much with the screws in the lugs before selling it. Before, I had to put chains on the Gravely to push the snow blower. It pushed the 4' snowplow fine with dual turfs. That old square chute snow blower was a beast though.

I did it after reading herein about some putting screws into motorcycle tires and racing them on the ice.

Years ago studded snow tires for cars were common and I can say from experience that on hard packed snow and ice they made a huge difference. I would have to think they would work much the same for tractors operating under the similar conditions.

As to them being better than chains, for all around use I don't think so.

Yes its hard to beat tire chains for traction i think also. But I have a little concern about driving comfort on main roads with chains. My retired father will maybe next winter season start to clear snow for the municipality with my tractor. On walkways and smaller roads/driveways. This means he must drive on asphalt main roads quite some miles/time to get to the different places. With chains on maybe the rides will be a pain?

If I go with the lugs they will stay on year round. The Maxigrip company claim that they have tested the studs on a 19800 lbs JD for 700 hours on asphalt and not a single stud was gone after this.

Just want to check here first before I make a Swiss cheese out of my tires :)

This is not at all a new idea Gents and it is a good one at that. I was raised on the ice roads of Quebec long before the introduction of salt on road surfaces (that will tell you how old I am).... We used to install studs into our winter tires (maybe 100 per tire back then) and they worked much better and were far quieter than chains ever could. Other than being hard on pavement surface, which is why municipalities eventually banned them, the ride quality was a whole lot better than tire chains.
Also, when ice racing on motorbikes, we used to drive 2 to 300 wood screws from the inside of the tires and we would have セ of sharp pointed screws on the outside scary thought by today痴 safety standards, but we sure got going in a hurry

V-Bar Chains would be better and cheaper also.
I wanted chains on the front of my BX2660 but have a clearance problem.
I checked into the studs at my Kubota dealer but at a dollar thirty a piece I will go without.

I have thought really hard about doing this. Ultimately, I didn't like how permanent it is. My tires are already 8 years old with 75% tread left, so it would stand to reason that I will have them another 10. Do I know that I will want the studs for the next 10 years? I decided I would get chains for that reason alone. I am sure the studs will work great though.

BTW, studs and chains are both still legal in WV on cars/trucks.

These would probably work great on bare ice, but if there was a inch or more of snow you'd probably never know they were there... Can't beat chains for all around traction.

I hate chains. Rode in a car once in Buffalo area. Clump Clump Clump. Had them on my Gravely. Real pain to put on. Had one end of one get caught on a brake backing part (Gravely steering brakes, much like drum brakes on cars). About ripped off a tire. Broke the chain, luckily, before it did.

We vacationed once to Sapporo for the ice festival. Virtually ALL the cars there had 4 wheel studded tires. They needed them because both the streets and the sidewalks were icey.

Ran studded snow tires in NJ. Law required that they be removed first sign of spring. They tore up the roads.

Years ago we use to put screws in dirt bike tires and race on the ice. You would swear you were on pavement because the traction was so good. But the heads wear and you can't get the screws back out. With some wear they loose a lot of the traction.

I think if your rip out a stud out a hunk of tire gets ripped out with it. That's the way it worked for me anyway.

I am currently using carbide hex head studs designed for ATV's on my M59, they have a v-cut head for bite....1/4" head with 1/2" screw depth...sor far they are superior to rubber alone...tire chains will often not fit the newer tractors because of poor fender well tolerances... cost is about 10cents per stud.. I purchased 500 for $50.00 cdn. Hex heads drive in with a screw gun and are removable at any time with little or no damage to the tire tread. I have pictures posted on the gallery

I've used (and still use) MaxiGrip Studs on my 3320 R-4's....front and rear...have three in each "lug"...won't make much difference in soft snow but in hard packed snow and ice they may all the difference....my previous tractors had chains...chains are better in snow but these do a very good job...and without them I would be helpless on ice...they are very easy to install

BTW..the maxi grips do have a Carbide tip cemented the depth of the hexagonal head...if my memory serves...I used HM 18's for the rear and HM 15's for the front tires
