I deciced to go insurance shopping as I suspected I was getting robbed on my rates with my current carrier(Allstate). As I suspected we were paying about $2300 more per year for vehicle and homeowner(for the same coverage). The one snag I ran into was with the new 1 ton.
One carrier(Travelers) would not insure it because they said it was too big, then they were asking why I needed such a big truck. I asked them what the GVW cutoff was and they couldnt tell me.
Now this truck is not used commecially and has an 11500 gvw.

Has anyone else run into this? I could see if it was a 4500 or larger but I see thousands of 3500 being used as daily drivers in my area.

I had an old 1 ton dually flatbed dump that was covered on my standard policy. They didn't know it was a dump though. When i picked up my int'l 4900 they wouldn't cover it. So i needed a separate commercial policy for it. I don't haul for $ and it is registered as a farm truck.

Odd that they said no,but then couldn't quote you a cutoff weight? Some states allow you to tag up or down.. I know florida does.

I have nationwide insurance, and i ONLY have 1t+ on my policy.. E350, F350, F450. non commercial policy..

Yes, I bought a 1T dump truck a few years ago for personal use. Insurance company would not add it to my regular auto policy. I had to get a separate commercial policy just for the truck. Between registration and insurance costs I decided it costs too much to have a dump truck for personal use. I sold the truck and bought a 16' dump trailer instead.
Insurance companies are strange. I could add a 1T pick up to my regular auto policy but not a 1T dump truck.
The pick up can be registered with passenger or commercial plates but the dump truck has to be commercial here.

I could understand if it was a dump body but this is standard pickup.

That is strange that your Allstate policy is that much higher than others. I recently did the internet pricing deal to compare to my Allstate policy for my 3 cars, boat, motorcycle, home and adding a motorhome and everything was much cheaper with Allstate than any other quote. I couldn't even get minimum state required coverage from others for what I am paying. Most quoted came in for 6 month premium higher than I pay for year with Allstate.
Also the Allstate DRIVEWISE program gave me an additional $98 check back for the year. I just met with my agent and he said I could get additional 15% savings by completing a save driver course which would be about $120 per year for the $25 course fee. I guess I will have to do that also. Every little bit helps when you are dealing with insurance.
By the way, my 3 cars, boat, motorcycle, motorhome AND homeowners insurance is less than the OP states he was saving. Maybe Arkansas is a cheaper place to insure. I don't use any of my vehicles to commute to school or work and annual usage for all is less than 10,000 miles per year and no moving violations.

I bet a work around is get a it, or 1t cab/chassis, and then get a dump bed 'kit' for it. I've even seen small trucks like F150 with dump bed kits that just dump the regular truck bed...

I've been with allstate for 18 yrs, when I lived in RI and my agent was fantastic. When we moved to CT the agent was small and ok, now they've grown and his service and Corparate has become terrible. I've used my homeowners once in 2011 for ice and water damage. I had three contractors quote repairs and the adjuster tried to short change us by $400. I told them if they could find a contractor to fix the damage for what they esitmeted I'd be fine with that. After two weeks they sent out a local adjuster who cut me check on the spot for the difference.

My homeowners policy used to be a few hundred a year now it's almost 2k. When I ask why they tell me building cost have gone up. My reply was that my house is worth less now than ever yet costing me more than ever. I think this is a regional thing. I have no moving violations and my commute is 5k per year with three vehicles on the policy. I also attended a defensive driving school that my employer requires for operating their vehichles. I inquired to my agent if I'd be able to get a discount and he laughed at me.

We've had State Farm for homeowners and a horse tack policy. We have had Liberty Mutual for a LONG time for auto and a personal liability policy.

Our State Farm agent called us a month ago and asked if we ever considered them for all our insurance needs.

State Farm reduced our annual bill by almost $1,500.

When I called Liberty Mutual to cancel they said, "Wow, you've been with us for a long time. Who are you going with?" When I told them State Farm and how much we were saving their only comment was, "That's quite a bit of money." They never attempted to keep me as a customer.

I use my truck on my job to meet with contractors and haul material from time to time. if you read the fine print with most insurance companies they don't cover it being used as "delivery vehicle" therefore I have to have a commercial policy on a 1/2 ton truck.
