Insurance for your truck

There isn't a one size fits all ins company. Everyone's autos, history, and situation is different. What is cheapest for you may be the most expensive for the next guy. If you take 10 of the top insurance companies and 10 different people, odds are the cheapest is going to be something different for most of the 10.

Everyone's e really needs to call around. I like calling a few local indepent agents that write for several companies. That way just a few calls shops 10-15 companies.

For me, its Erie. And I will note that I have never been questioned on 1-tons. Although I have it commercial now, it didn't use to be

I'm getting quotes now for car/home insurance. I was very surprised to see the six month rate on my 2015 RAM 3500 Longhorn was $47 less than my for my wife's 2013 Chevy Equinox and my 2013 RAM 1500 Laramie. I don't have all the quotes in yet so I don't know if this going to be a trend, the difference was in medical, body injury and I forgot the other one.

Of the five insurance carries I talked with, no one questioned the 3500 or its use.

I'm thinking the rep for travelers may have just been wrong, I ended up beating their quote with Geico anyways so I guess it's a moot point.
Customer service is dead and buried and loyalty means nothing anymore so I'm not sure why I'm suprised with Allstate. I've shopped around in the past and Allstate had been in the ball park.

I had a similar experience with Allstate.

But on your question. We have the F350 and horse trailer covered on our policy with Farmers--no issues. The liability is not cheap for the truck--~$900/year. As my agent explained, if you hit most cars with that 350, it will not be a fender bender--you will most likely total the other vehicle.

Agreed, I was low speed rear ended a couple years back. I was in my 99 f350 dually I still have as my daily driver. I got a small dent in my bumper, the f150 that hit me was towed with 4000$+ damage including front clip, rad, hood, both front lamp module clusters and both front quarter panels... All the same, I'm glad I was in the big truck..safer..

Sa.e here, nationwide didn't bat an eye at insuring my e350, f350 &f450.

And as you said, rates for instance for the 2014 e350 were comparable to the old 2000 GMC Yukon I replaced it with., same coverage levels.

Maybe try the auto club for a quote... they seem to value members a little more than other companies...

At least this had been my experience...

When Mom's homeowners bailed from California... the CSAA took her without incident... and later she had CSAA for all her insurance...

Over the years, I've had State Farm, Allstate, Farmers and I don't remember how many others. And I'll never understand how they decide how much to charge and what they will and will not insure. When we lived on 10 acres in Navarro County, we had Farmers insurance on the car, the pickup, and the Kubota. But then came a time when my insurance agent said he was really having a hard time because Farmers quit insuring farm equipment and that was a major part of his business. Of course I had to get other insurance on my Kubota.

For the last 10 years, we've had AAA homeowners and vehicles insurance. I've checked in the past with GEICO and they could never beat the AAA. So this week, I checked with The Hartford that AARP pushes and with Liberty Mutual that does so much TV advertising and they were very close to the same as AAA. So I reckon I'll stay with AAA for at least another year.:D

When I have compared all lines of coverage with AAA... it seems to be fair...

I have had others that could beat the auto insurance... not the property.

When there was a large fire about 5 miles from here... AAA called and asked if I needed help... they had moving trucks and private fire crews available... never have before or since had an Insurance Company call to offer assistance before loss...

Had super policies with Fireman's' fund and Ohio Casualty... no complaints and a great local agent... one day get letters they are pulling out of our market and that was that...

Have a good Farmer's agent and a good State Farm agent that recently passed... seems good agents know what works and what doesn't and can really make a difference.

The last home I bought... no one wanted me because of the land and open space nearby... called my Farmer's agent and he had to pull some strings and made it happen...

AAA did insist on inspecting my 3/4 ton truck prior to writing insurance on it... wanted to make sure how it was equipped and or modified and or condition... inspection took about 2 minutes...

Thankfully my old Ford pickup qualifies for Collector Vehicle coverage... the best deal out there for vehicles not used daily or for work...

I deciced to go insurance shopping as I suspected I was getting robbed on my rates with my current carrier(Allstate). As I suspected we were paying about $2300 more per year for vehicle and homeowner(for the same coverage). The one snag I ran into was with the new 1 ton.
One carrier(Travelers) would not insure it because they said it was too big, then they were asking why I needed such a big truck. I asked them what the GVW cutoff was and they couldnt tell me.
Now this truck is not used commecially and has an 11500 gvw.

Has anyone else run into this? I could see if it was a 4500 or larger but I see thousands of 3500 being used as daily drivers in my area.

In February 2014 I was hit head on in my 2013 F150. Fortunately nobody hurt due to it being a relatively low speed hit. A couple thousand dollars damage to the truck. I had Travelers. To make the long story short, it was the other guy's fault for crossing into my lane. The claim was subrogated and in the end Travelers got their money back from the other driver's insurance company.
Next thing I know, Travelers cancels me. They said that because I had an advertising decal on the truck and an amber light on top (for winter storm use only, it comes off in spring) that I need commercial insurance on the truck. In New York, photos are taken of a vehicle by the insurance company if there is collision coverage on it unless the vehicle is brand new and just driven off the dealer's lot. Travelers had no problem giving me a non commercial policy even though they had photos of the truck with the decals on it.
Agent goes to bat for me. No luck. Agent finds another company that says light & decals are not a problem and do not require commercial vehicle insurance. So let's just say that I'm not overly fond of Travelers.
Currently with Liberty Mutual on the vehicles. Got discounts for the RightTrack module. Automatic 5% and then a discount is calculated after 3 months of using the device. Then you unplug the device and send it back to them. You can also keep track online of what the device sees while its in use. Hard braking, rapid acceleration and other events. It also keep a running account of what your discount is.
Moral of the story: Shop several different companies. Give them all of your details up front so that they don't try to weasel out on you later.

Like others have said shop around. I currently have Farm Bureau for all my insurance here in NC. I have had Geico and Nationwide also. Owning 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks never had an issue with the policy. I think though that once a dump bed goes on or anything 1-1/2 ton or greater is considered commercial.
