Insurance for your truck

I take it your job doesn't have a commercial auto policy listing 'any auto' and instead only lists 'scheduled auto', and has no coverage provision for 'rented auto'. Rented or any, could cover your personal vehicle in the even of an 'insurance event'. Mind you there would likely be a fight about primary and secondary coverage, with the private insurance disavowing coverage of the event.. however the commercial coverage ( if any auto ) would/should be on the hook.

Just a hypothetical... I know where I work, our commercial auto policy lists 'any auto'. It's more expensive than listing only 'scheduled auto' however is ultimately more flexible. ( we do however only cover listed drivers! )

As a Salesman/Manager I have to use my vehicle to work and company mandates 100/300 coverage. I only carry that on my truck as it is used most often and 90% of the time is driven to see customers. The company could care less what I drive as long as I do my job. I am more efficient using a truck to be able to haul if needed. It would be **** balancing a bundle of shingles on a bicycle

I can't imagine having any less than 100/300 coverage.

It's always good to call around every couple years to make sure you are getting the best deal. Sounds like your agent is putting the screws to you, maybe been upping the costs a bit every year so it's not noticeable. This seems to be a common practice. I've bounced around but currently am with Allstate. They are giving me a good deal right now.

I've been with allstate for 18 yrs, when I lived in RI and my agent was fantastic. When we moved to CT the agent was small and ok, now they've grown and his service and Corparate has become terrible. I've used my homeowners once in 2011 for ice and water damage. I had three contractors quote repairs and the adjuster tried to short change us by $400. I told them if they could find a contractor to fix the damage for what they esitmeted I'd be fine with that. After two weeks they sent out a local adjuster who cut me check on the spot for the difference.

My homeowners policy used to be a few hundred a year now it's almost 2k. When I ask why they tell me building cost have gone up. My reply was that my house is worth less now than ever yet costing me more than ever. I think this is a regional thing. I have no moving violations and my commute is 5k per year with three vehicles on the policy. I also attended a defensive driving school that my employer requires for operating their vehichles. I inquired to my agent if I'd be able to get a discount and he laughed at me.

Time for a different agent. I think everyone gives discount for defensive driving. Allstate and Progressive for sure have the driving modules that you can install and if you drive safe they will get you a discount. My Allstate policy gave a 10% cut just for installing them. They monitor a lot of stuff from fast starts, fast stops and speed to name the few that I have seen. They will get you a cut rate price though if you drive safely and at the speed limit.

I've had about 10 different insurance companies in my life. So far the best is Shelter.

Give them a try. I have my 1Ton, 1/2 ton, Edge, 2 boats, and home owners with them.

It can be very hard to get insurance...

Over the years... companies I have been with simply refused to renew... no claims history at all...

Had a very good independent that wrote a lot of Fireman's Fund and was reasonable... all of a sudden they no longer were writing in Oakland CA and it really decimated this old family insurance firm...

Had friends with Liberty Mutual and when I looked into it... they also had a moratorium on new policies in my zip code.

Here's the kicker... when my brother left home and moved about 15 minutes away... his rate dropped 42% and the company called several times and even came by the house to see if he had really moved...

It can be really tough to get insurance if you live in a big inner city or even far out in the county.... seems everyone want to write in upper middle class suburbs...

My vehicles are too old for the modules... at least this is what I was told when I said my daily driver is a like new 91 pickup and my work truck is a 1985

I had a similar experience with Allstate.

But on your question. We have the F350 and horse trailer covered on our policy with Farmers--no issues. The liability is not cheap for the truck--~$900/year. As my agent explained, if you hit most cars with that 350, it will not be a fender bender--you will most likely total the other vehicle.

Yes, I bought a 1T dump truck a few years ago for personal use. Insurance company would not add it to my regular auto policy. I had to get a separate commercial policy just for the truck. Between registration and insurance costs I decided it costs too much to have a dump truck for personal use. I sold the truck and bought a 16' dump trailer instead.
Insurance companies are strange. I could add a 1T pick up to my regular auto policy but not a 1T dump truck.
The pick up can be registered with passenger or commercial plates but the dump truck has to be commercial here.
Not sure what your insurance needs are but if you have any agricultural activities, check out Farm Family. I believe they are based in Albany.

I had my horse operation in PA insured through them. Total coverage on my dually was 275/year but I had to have a policy through another insurer on my wife's Explorer since it was not a farm vehicle.

FWIW, per a conversation I had with an insurance person years ago, policies generally cover a trailer. This is meant for a something small not some tandem dually. I have mentioned this before but thought I would throw it out again.
