Well I was gonna post here for help choosing hinges etc. for the gates on my fence project, but I stopped by the local fence place on the way home last night.

I ordered up 4 "packages" of snug cottage hardware agricultural hinges.

See attached pdf that shows installation / gate building instructions. What really sold me was the adjustable bottom hinge.

Thought I'd pass it along...

Nice looking gate. I like the way you bolted it together. The clamp lower hinge is pretty handy looking.

While not necessary for your application, when I hang a gate I put the hinge pins facing each other. That way our horses can't fiddle with the gate & end up lifting it up & off.

Good tip on the hinge when restraining animals...

Hi, I just dropped by to look at your gate.
I like the look and design, BUT I count 7 boards.:D

Picky, picky,picky.

The farmer next to my old house use to put the hinges in posts top facing up and the bottom facing down. He said the cows use to nudge them up and the would come off pins as this picture shows and they were loose.

That's a nice web site. Bookmarked that one. When I was looking for strap hinges for my barn I tried and tried to find enough matching straps on e-bay but I never could and the price was outrageous. Then I looked at higher end stuff in the traditional style but because I needed 9 straps and 9 pintles it would have put me in the $500 - $1,000 price range...OW! I then finally looked at national hardware (The stuff you see at the local hardware or TSC) Looked at their full line on their web site found 24" strap hinges and 3/4" bolt pintles. Went to my local hardware who carriers National and he ordered them up and I had them in a week for under $250.

Similar to the way I build my gates. Only I built mine to only swing one way. What I like about these hinges is I can move either hinge by tightening or loosening the nuts on the sides of the post which allows me to move the gate a little to the right or left or tilt the gate up or down to dial in the latch to its mating hole.

Those are convenient hinge posts to have but I have found that when I build gates, they seem to be stronger if I run my diagonal from the bottom hinge upward instead of from the top hinge downward.:)

I went out and took a look and it seems I built all the gates that way. Then I tried to think back as to what my rational was at the time I built them. Now I remember I was thinking the brace was a replacement for a turnbuckle and cable. So given that I’ll bet you wouldn’t put a turnbuckle and cable as you describe, from the bottom hinge upward. :)
