I have found this whole thread quite interesting, but one things about he scenario that has not come up is the HD VS Lowes match-up. I for one would have guessed that HD would have had something in the agreement with JD against selling to another "Big Box Store." My guess is that those die hard green freaks out there are going to benefit the most because of the price wars for market share. I believe that CC fans will benefit from better overall service from the "real dealers" albeit at a higher priced machine. I think everyone wins in a roundabout way. Either you get service or you save $$$. I think it should be interesting to see what happens. I am just glad I am not in the market and don't have to decide what to buy. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My son is more computer oriented where as I am more hands oriented...he usually does not care about cars, etc different makes as long as it is a car...he recently made the comment after climbing off of the JD lawn mower.."Thats a really nice mower"..... something about it caught his attention...of course he had been use to driving the Old Craftsman...which at one time was " a very nice mower". But the ease of use and comfort of the Deere did impress my son...he actually likes mowing the grass now. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I guess he has never been to a full line dealership then? makes for a good day overall -Box stores are not a true representation of whats available -

I talked to my rep about this two days ago. He thinks there is a good chance that HD might pick up Cub, they are also looking at 4-5 other major outlets whom MTD is already building for. No, Cub will not pull out of lowes, they have too many other exclusive products that they already build for them to jepordize the relationship.

Sure he has....thats where we bought the lawn mower....The same place I bought my JD 4400....when we bought the lawn mower there was no Home Depot in my area.....He has been to lots of John Deere dealerships.... /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif I did not need to spend a small fortune on a lawn mower since I just needed to mow my lawn. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Oh I just assumed at least it was related to the box stores ( Lowes or Home Depot), and Cub's relationship with them.
Thats what I thought this thread was about....nevermind

Cactus has it right, find right the tool for the job and know what you're getting.

The problems with the box-stores isn't so much just having the low-end stuff, as overzealous sales guys touting it as the "real thing".

On the relationship thing; one IH dealer told me that if engine substitutions or other annomalies are made, they generally go to the "discount" places instead of dealers, but I have no idea whether that statement was true, based on an isolated event, or pure smoke. A thread earlier this spring, concluded that the box guys can only sell the "low-end" stuff, but that seems to get fuzzier all the time too.

Slightly off track, but I think the overlying question is still how to buy the right machine:

go to a full line dealer, sit-on and maybe test the cheaper and more expensive machines...look over all the moving or stressed components [especially ones you particularly abuse most; maybe deck, maybe steering, maybe engine or tranny....all of the above?! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif]. Check your gut feelings against the written specs and pick what is right for you!

This is real easy if you have one brand or one machine size and type in mind. Else, you can OD on info, but just keep it fun however deep you decide to research! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

( So, I suppose all JD and CC products priced below, say $10,000, are total junk. Hmm. Something makes me think your comments are unsubstantiated and based totally on your own personal dislike of Deere for whatever reason. )

Maybe Deere didn't grant him credit. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I don't agree with that.
I know don't know how things are everywhere else, but at the HD's here in south TEXAS, the Deeres in the HDs are assembled and initially serviced by our local Deere servicemen.
I have seen them there and wondered what they were doing there. Sure enough, they are heading off unforeseen problems with the tractors, after all they will be doing the warranty work. The HD employees don't even unload them from the John Deere trailers - the local dealer's men do. I've seen this at two different HDs enough distance apart that it's not even the same JD dealer.
One more reason that these products are for the discriminating clientele.

Off the subject, but, I recently wanted a John Deere poly lawn cart that I saw at HD. I mentioned it to my dealer that I'd love to have one, but would not give HD the business instead of a servicing dealer. Dealer called me that afternoon and told me Deere ships them in lots of three, and that they would not be ordering any for stock. I told them that I really wanted one. They did some sort of internal paperwork with HD and I picked it up from the Dealer the next day.

This is the type of exposure (more dealers {of any type} = better service in the future) that is good regardless of what brand you decide to buy.
