Bill

Just got back from spending a couple of days at the Wentworth Inn in Jackson NH. Mt Washington was socked in. A couple of years ago my wife and I climbed Mt Washington while we were staying at the Mt Washington Hotel. When we got back to the hotel we sat on the veranda that goes around the hotel and looked up at the mountain. We toasted and said we just climbed you. Wonderful time.

Hi Ron!

We stayed in Jackson on our trip last October. We stayed at the Eagle Inn (a pic is attached). The wife wanted to stay at an honest to goodness historic landmark. I wanted to stay at any place that had golf course! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Absolutely LOVED Jackson! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Beautiful little town. We spent our second day over in Conway and enjoyed the excursion train ride. Beautiful country!! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Why all this bickering about what temperature is REALLY cold?

What does it matter whether it's minus 60 degrees or minus 114 degrees?

For ME, cold is anything below the freezing point of water.

LOL I noticed that you were able to include a golfcart in your picture of the Inn. Beautiful place. How was the food?

Fivestring,
You are right and correct me if I am wrong, Clingmons Dome in Tennessee is the second highest by only about 50'.
I was on Mount Mitchell in 1995 on a July morning and it was 38 degree, which is not that cold compared to some other mountains in the US,but I thought it was pretty cold considering the location of North Carolina and the time of year.

I actually climbed it while I was in college... )</font>

I've driven up it a few times.. you really have to pick the right day or you'll be clouded in up there and can't see anything. And it can be 90F at the bottom, and about 40 at the top. (They thoughtfully have a gift shop at the top selling warm clothing for about 50% over normal prices. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You guys who walked up, whew, wish I had that kind of energy these days.

You guys who rode the train up.. I seem to recall an incident a while back where something went wrong and the train backed all the way down in "freefall".. not a fun time!

First time I went up was with my dad driving many decades ago.. I remember him looking down over the side of the road and saying he'd be a lot more comfortable with an airplane stick in his hand rather than a steering wheel! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

They have a sign up there saying it has the world's worst weather.. or maybe the country's, I don't remember.. but it gets serious up there! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I drove up Pike's Peak on my motorcycle in August '87; stopped about half way up to put on a jacket and my gloves. I met a young couple at the top, also on a motorcycle, and we visited awhile over coffee, then when we went to the parking lot to start back down and I was putting on my gloves, the young lady said she'd checked to see if they had any gloves in the gift shop and they did not. She looked at me (and my gloves) wistfully and sorrowfully said, "I guess you'd want about $50 for those gloves." /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I said, "Or more." /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif I felt sorry for her, but not sorry enough to let her have my gloves. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The place was fantastic, and the food was great! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif We were there over Saturday night to Sunday, so we were able to enjoy their Sunday buffet. Boy, was that good!

The only problem we had was that on Saturday night, there was a wedding reception there. They had planned on having the wedding guests stay out on the big, wrap around porch (you can see it in the picture). But it turned so cold that evening, that they were all inside. You couldn't even walk through the lobby. You had to walk through the bar and out the other side of the dining room to get to your rooms. A little inconvenient, but it was fun seeing everyone having a good time.

My ONLY complaint was that the inn is so old, the floors squeak just terribly! You could hear everyone walking up and down the hallway even when they were 3 or 4 rooms away! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Made for difficult sleeping.

Other than that, I would HIGHLY recommend the Eagle Inn for a place to stay. Absolutely beautiful! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If we hadn't been able to get in to the Eagle Inn, our next choice was the Wentworth. How was it? We saw it and thought it seemed nice.

The main Inn at the Wentworth is like the Eagle Inn. The rooms are charming and comfortable. You can hear the Ellis River running under the stone bridge out front. A full 5 course gourmet dinner ia included in their plan as well as breakfast. There are a number of outbuildings that have been restored and have full suites with either whirlpools in the ground level suites or hot tubs in the upper level suites. The hot tubs are set in their own porches with heated tile floors. My wife and I get a kick out of sitting in the hot tub during a blizzard watching the snow come down. I popped the cork on a bottle of champagne while I was sitting in the hot tub. The cork flew out into the parking lot as diners were leaving the dining room. I heard someone yell: " Hey". I yelled: "Sorry". They laughed so I guess they were not offended. One of the times that we had headed North we stopped in North Conway at Horsefeathers to have a drink and unwind. We had a conversation with a young couple that was staying at a Motel in town. We told them that we were staying at The Wentworth. Later that evening my wife and I went to the dining room for dinner and ran into the couple. They had checked out of their Hotel and had rented a suite at the Wentworth. They called it "serendipity". Jackson is such a quaint little Town. You have to cross over a covered bridge to get into Town. It is the home of the Jackson Cross Country Ski association. In the winter the golf courses at the Wentworth and the Eagle Inn are part of the 150 miles or so of cross country ski trails in Town.
The Mount Washington Hotel is another place you may be interested in. They have an eighteen hole and a nine hole golf course on the grounds and have golf packages. It is one of the grand hotels of the North.
