Your summary in #1 is correct. However, it appears that the update kit was not installed on this tractor, or it would not have failed. Since your tractor was purchased at an auction, second-hand, no warranty applies to this tractor. Our experience has been that some modules would fail if they were ever operated without the relay installed. So you should probably install the relay kit and replace the control module. Then it should be OK.
The control module really should be replaced because if it is failing, it also controls all the safety features of the tractor, ie, if you fall off the seat, the safety feature would shut off the engine.
If you call Allmand, they may possibly help you out.
The diode/relay eliminates voltage spikes in the system, and is actually in the glow-plug preheat circuit.
