GOAL:
Build or buy and install an intermittent wiper control for a JD3520 cab.

THE FACTS:

TBN Member Dirtworksequip has a JD3520 cab with windshield wiper.

The wiper works by an electric switch.

The wiper is either on or off and stops wherever it is when the switch is turned off.

He would like to have intermittent wipers for those days when it is just misting and manually turning the wipers off and on all day gets tiresome.

Anyone got any ideas?

We could fab up a circuit with a 555 timer and relays, etc... but it would be nice to find a unit that already exists.

They used to be avail at any auto parts house (add-on splice-in unit). I'd try JC Whitney now.

It sounds like the wiper does not have a park function (it stops wherever it is when the switch is turned off). Will the intermittent add-on unit work on this setup?

Probably not. The aftermarket intermittent wiper systems turn off the wipers when the motor get's to the end of one full wipe. It sounds like this system does not have a park function. If you could find a auto/truck wiper motor that would fit then you would have the park function and could wire up a intermittent wiper system.

I wonder if you could install a rheostat for an adjustable speed motor as opposed to intermittent. Just slow it way down, but then that might be bad on motor.

What I was thinking is that we just need to develop a timer circuit that operates a relay. The timer would energize the relay on an adjustable delay with a potentiometer, say 5 to 30 seconds. The relay would stay open for a time delay of say 2 or 3 seconds.

The wiper will move for 2 or 3 seconds and stop where ever it is. Then, after the delay of 5 to 30 seconds, it will start again for 2-3 seconds, wait, start, wait, etc.... It should be able to make one or two complete passes on the glass in 2 or three seconds. The only downside would be that it will stop anywhere on the window once the 2 or 3 seconds is up.

It is no different than the operator flipping the switch off and on every 30 seconds except the operator can choose to flip the switch off when the wiper is to the side so it doesn't block his view.

The only way to prevent the wiper from stopping in the field of view is to either use limit switches or change the wiper motor to one that auto parks.

Did you ever make any headway on this? The fast wiper is obnoxious!

I don't believe I have a self parking wiper. The wiper stops where it was when I hit the button.

On the recommendations from my buddies on a Model T forum I am thinking of trying one of the units on qkits.com. I first need to look up and find how many amps my wiper motor uses and buy accordingly. I am currently looking at the 15 amp unit. I need to take air cooling flow and heat build up into my final decision. Kit MX033

I have one of those aftermarket ww timers somewhere! It was just a 555 timer circuit. Was going to put it on my 77 Plymouth but never got around to it.

The non self parking issue is a nuisance. You could incorporate an (alarm type) mini magnet and reed sensor on the wiper and wire it into the circuit, but this makes the whole project more complicated by far.

Actually, I could use something like that on my Kubota too. I am always reaching up to give the thing one swipe. I would give up a bunch of features on my p/u trucks if they would just put a button on the steering wheel to give me a single swipe of the wipers. But I guess they are FAR too stupid to make something so simple yet usefull.

Omron makes a really nice line of timers. Octal plug. Wide operating voltages and a myriad of functions and times. Try and get one of these from E-Bay. Much more reliable then a 555 circuit which is very sensitive to noise as far as its triggering pulse.
