I think it's pretty common to have the PS react like that at low rpms whether you have an implement on or not. Does yours have a separate pump for the power steering or is combined with the rest of your hydraulics?

As I understand it the 6610 II's have dual pumps. Actually, when I bought the thing I had no idea what that meant, now I'm starting to get it. That may not be the case for all 6610 II's, but I was told mine did.

As 3RRL is touching on.. as engine rpm is lower.. so will hyd pump output be.

At idle, My big ford 5000 and NH 7610s also have bad power steering.. rev them up and you can cut donuts...

If you wanted better power steering, you needed to select a gear / range that let you rev the engine above idle.

The lifted load on your hyds was no longer a real burden as the check valve was holding it up.. minus any loss due to leakage that would have been used to regenerate the system.. etc..

Good to know about the check valve thing. This isn't an operating condition I'm antsy to work in, it was just something I experienced when I grabbed a gear to get through the gate. The cattle in this field are not mine, they are the "trouble" cattle I've mentioned from a guy helping me out on the farm. He bottle fed several of the cows and they have NO comfort zone. They will come up and lean on you while you are trying to shut the gate, and just won't get out of the way unless you pop them on the head with something.

It's good to understand that it wasn't a problem with my tractor, but normal given the operating conditions. Thanks!

spivey,
Some of us Chinese tractor owners have put a heavier hydraulic fluid in our power steering to help with that condition. I run AW32 throughout the rest of the tractor's hydraulics but use AW68 for the power steering unit. Seems like it reacts better at low rpms that way. You might want to consult your manual to see if that is OK to do in your tractor?

Interesting. I'd not heard of doing that. I'll check to see if that will help me. Just curious, but why would the make of your tractor (chinese Vs. other) make a difference? And, if that's a universal fix, I wonder why it wouldn't be standard for tractors with a seperate PS pump.

I don't know that this is the answer, but my guess is USA made cylinders and valves are a lot better than the Chinese ones, meaning the tolerances and associated clearances might allow for a heavier fluid to work better in less than perfect fits. Just a guess though. In any case, it made a difference on my Kama's power steering. I guess you could try it since it's generally a small amount of fluid we're talking about. You can always change it out.
