As I understand it the 6610 II's have dual pumps. Actually, when I bought the thing I had no idea what that meant, now I'm starting to get it. That may not be the case for all 6610 II's, but I was told mine did.

At idle, My big ford 5000 and NH 7610s also have bad power steering.. rev them up and you can cut donuts...
If you wanted better power steering, you needed to select a gear / range that let you rev the engine above idle.
The lifted load on your hyds was no longer a real burden as the check valve was holding it up.. minus any loss due to leakage that would have been used to regenerate the system.. etc..
Good to know about the check valve thing. This isn't an operating condition I'm antsy to work in, it was just something I experienced when I grabbed a gear to get through the gate. The cattle in this field are not mine, they are the "trouble" cattle I've mentioned from a guy helping me out on the farm. He bottle fed several of the cows and they have NO comfort zone. They will come up and lean on you while you are trying to shut the gate, and just won't get out of the way unless you pop them on the head with something.
It's good to understand that it wasn't a problem with my tractor, but normal given the operating conditions. Thanks!
