Dargo, I'm an ex-photo junkie who used to love to develop his own stuff, I still have my big professional Nikon F2A camera bodies, but I think the last time I used one was on my honeymoon almost 20 years ago. What I have learned is that the best camera to have is one that you can actually carry around with you and consequently that is the kind you end up using. I've got a Canon S230 and a Canon S500, both are TINY little cameras, about the size of a pack of Marlboro cigarettes, optics and color rendition are very good. These cameras are the ones LIKELY to end up in a pocket and LIKELY to be used to snap pictures of my daughter playing soccer, hunting Easter eggs, or some other activity.
I think there is a place for bulky cameras, they are great for PLANNED events where you plan to lug them out for specific reasons.
But if you are in over your head with the Canon EOS type systems, consider a little high quality pocket digital. You'll probably find that you, or Mrs_Dargo acutally have it with you when a spontaneous shot can be taken.
