What is the best way to get decent internet service in the country? I'm out in the Marquez/Jewett area. Looking into WISP's, satellite and Windstream. The Windstream installer suggested I use a WISP provider. What do you guys do? I need pretty decent speed for work.

There are a lot of us old folks on here. I started on a 300 baud back in '84. Now I've a 50GB up at my Va. residence and a 6GB at another. So what do you deem "pretty decent speed"?
My MS ISP gives me 6 down/.6 up. My Mobley often gives 10 down/2 up.

Had a satellite ISP, now using ATT Fixed Wireless (antenna module in attic, wifi router inside with 4 wired pots) same price over 20x data

Starlink was advertising out here for a while - no longer.

I have HughesNet 4. I've heard the HN 5 is faster. 4 is plenty fast enough for me.

Many of the cell phone services provide internet service also. This would not work out here. On a really good day I will get two bar reception on my cell phone. At least 50% of the time my cell phone shows "zip" for reception.

Here on the north coast options are limited. I am following that Starlink thread and hope to be an early adopter!

At ground level our cell phone is zero. I put a booster antenna on a pole 20 ft above the roof, that gives us fully usable phone in the house. To convert to wifi I use a netgear modem hooked to a cradlepoint wireless router. That gives us 2-5 mb up and down depending, which is enough for my wife to watch streaming video and more than enough for web browsing, email etc. Hoping that Starlink is cheaper and faster.

I'm hoping for more options for me, I get unreliable 1mb download which is just enough for Netflix but no other streaming service, and just enough to frustrate one person on a phone or computer... That's with DSL for $50/month, last I looked into satellite it was $120... there's a couple cell phone based options but most use Verison towers which don't have service here, and the one option that looked most hopeful was $100 for the service call to see if it would work then $50/month for I think 5mb...

Satellite link is the only option here. I have the plan that says "up to 15 Mb down", typically it's in the 1 to 3 Mb down range so no point getting a higher speed package. There is talk about a fiberoptic line coming out here, but nothing happening yet.

Another thread has about Ubifi. Appears to use an antenna, etc.

Fortunately, here we could switch to Comcast because they have the lines and all out here. We had them for TV until Xfinity linked with them. Couldn't deal with them then. Went with Centurylink DSL. Proved completely unsatisfactory during these times of heavy use.

On Comcast now for internet and phone.

I don't know much about internet speeds or options. I basically want the fastest service I can get so I can work at my land rather than have to be in my office. I have very good cell reception with Verizon. I need to run a Ring smart home and have good internet service for work.

I have several calls in to some of the WISP services to inquire about them building tower on my land...apparently a mini tower for rural areas that is connected to a larger network. These guys don't answer their phones or emails and they don't return calls. That makes me worry about what their service experience would really be like.

Windstream isn't feasible because I'm just past their fiber optic lines according to their installer.

Ubifi isn't taking new orders. They were quick to give me insight as to how they work but haven't responded to answer whether the wait list is due to equipment or service. I was wondering if I can buy the equipment on Amazon but have Ubifi provide the service. No response yet.

Is your setup a cell booster, or just a high antenna used for a data link? I haven't had much luck with cell boosters, but it's been a few years and they may have improved. Not reallly interested in wifi.

I personally would not buy a house with no decent internet access because I am an IT professional. Internet is an absolute must to stay in my field and keep my job. I have very good cable internet here even though Im in the country.

For ubifi you would need one of their SIM cards. You can buy your own equipment to put it in. In fact you can buy the exact mofi router they promote on amazon. But without the ubifi sim you cannot access their network.

I hope this does not mean they are going out of business as I love their service.

I have Frontier Vantage internet, which is fast when it works. But the big problem is...when it works. I am on my 6th different service guy this year. He is mystified at the issue of just dropping out. But he has tried more than anyone else has.

I have had this service 3 years, I am guessing it has been out close to 4 - 5 moths total in 3 years.

So I am looking for a replacement, just not much to chose from where I live

I think I'm going to try these guys: Holy Wireless

It's expensive and I'm a little concerned because it's an area I don't understand well. These guys come out an install a tower that allows you to hop on their fiber system. I'll let you know how it works. I've talked to a few people that say it works well but most people aren't willing to pay for the tower.
