Call the guy back. Tell him you have checked around and, as a result of your inquiries, you have decided that the price you quoted is way out of line. Tell him you will do it for $50 an acre.

In May05 my newly purchased 10 acres here in the North Valley needed mowing (3-4 ft weeds). Cheapest estimate was $50/acre (not per hour).
The next month I had a new 21-hp Kubota B7510HST with LA302 FEL and a 4-ft KK brush hog to do that job (and a lot others) myself.

If you wind up doing it, come up with a release form for him to sign saying you are not liable for any damages that occur while mowing on his property. If he questions it or refuses to sign, walk/drive away and NEVER consider doing business with the guy again.

As another post said" just my 2( I just realized this instant that this keyboard doesn't have a cent key on it!) cents worth. I'm at the point of raising my rates once again, the horrible fuel prices of this last year, horrible insurance costs, and horrible breakdowns (Beginning to see a pattern here) all contribute to what to charge per acre or by the hour. I mow commercially, with different mowers to suit induvidual jobs and grounds. I almost exclusivly? charge by the hour. The new tractor( Montana 5740 C ) is doing the bigger jobs better, but I hadn't even factored in the cost of the bigger engine costing more money per hour to operate. More net loss for fuel. If your two days of mowing were full 8 hour days, and haul in time, my bill would have been just shy of $1.000, and I wouldn't have flinched a bit about handing it to them. In fact , I've got a couple of outstanding accounts that I'll just write a bill to right now. And maybe finally tack on that 2.5 % carryover charge to them.; Sum, don't give it away, I still give away some services too cheap, but around this neighborhood, you can't just build a burnpile anywhere, It's worth it to me to use a customers property to burn legally, but without getting a burn permit for the better part of the year, and swap him usually 3 mowings on his property, for the option to keep a burn pile.

I need to quit being a software engineer and move to your area and start a mowing business. I can cut 10 acres in less than 1.5 hours -- $500/1.5 = $333/hour. Sweet!

You are being really good to him. I wouldn't touch it for less than $800. Actually, for a friend or acquaintance I might do it for $600, but the kind of guy you're dealing with gets $200 stupid tax added.

Afternoon Scesnic,
I think you need to get more than that for all that work, better yet it might be a good idea to just walk away from that character !
Sounds pretty ungrateful to me !

I never answer or return calls from previous customers like him. They are not worth the effort/time/breath it takes to answer their call. You were being way too fair/cheap with your price for that amount of acreage, and the customer knew---this is why he called you back. Let him go rent a tractor and brush cutter for $200 per day (rent based on 8 hours per day) plus delivery/pickup---$80 to $100, his time and fuel. If he damages something, then he can pay for that too. Doing it himself would cost more than you were going to charge if you factor everything in.
The reason he has a big John Deere sitting there, is because he knows you are doing it for less than it would cost him per hour to run his tractor and cutter---normal wear, depreciation, fuel, tires, filters and oil, damage, etc., etc.. Not to mention his time, which has to be worth something to him.
He is someone who wants something for nothing and takes advantage of everyone. Simply put, rude and crude---jerk!
There are lots of nice and understanding customers waiting in line. This is 2006, not 1970. Service the many good ones, ignore the few jerks.

a big ol' John Deere. I guess he is just too lazy to mow it his self

What would you guys charge to brush hog this field?

I'd tell him I'd do if for $200.00. But I'd have to use that big old John Deere.:)
