I found a Woods 840 brush hog on craigslist....

I'm not ready for a brush hog yet, but when I am I want to get a heavy duty unit. Do you think this is too much for my Kubota L4610?

Woods 840 Brush Bull for sale. Category II three point hitch mount. Requirements for tractor are a minimum of 40 PTO horsepower. 84-inch (seven foot) cut. This mower was purchased new from Theodore Montross Farm Machinery in Centermoreland, PA. Mower was not abused and stored inside, except for this last winter. This is the heavy duty dual rear wheel model, with stump jumper plate, new knives installed, centrifugal clutch, and new rubber guarding installed at the front of the mower. This 1300 pound mower requires 540 rpm PTO.

Current list price for this mower is over $5,000. New retail is approximately $4500. Asking $2500, or best offer.

I'm not interested in buying this specific mower, but it made me think, I wonder what the heaviest duty mower (weight wise) I could handle? Would this be too heavy for my tractor?

I know it's at the limit hp wise, but I'm more curious about weight. When Carrying around a heavy brush hog on the back, there must be tremendous strain on the top link when bouncing over rocks and suck (brush hog lifted in the air not in use)

I really like the Bush Hog model 406 but I also worry that would be too 'much' for my tractor?

What are your thoughts?

The 7' brushbull would be a pain to operate. I'm not saying your tractor couldn't handle it but on rough terrain you'll be under steering, and sometimes the bush hog might even be telling the tractor where to go. A BH 406 or 286 would be much better. I've owned both and believe me they are tough!

dual rear wheels on the hog will really smooth things out

1300 should be to much of a task for your tractor. i would expect it to handle that with little to no weight needed on the front end. If you have a loader it shouldnt be a problem even if you drop the bucket.

I think that is too big for a L4610. The L is a fairly light tractor and that is a very heavy mower. I got a BrushBull 600 cheap off of CL which is technically undersized for my heavier Kioti DK40 but it works well. I could easily imagine running the BB720 but going up to the 840 is a really a stretch especially if you have hills or mow thick grass/brush. That said, the BrushBulls are very nice tough mowers.

That bush hog would be a load for your tractor, I would go with a medium duty 6'.
