Buying Advice Is an SCUT overkill?

/ Is an SCUT overkill? #41
You are Welcome.

I had always mowed with John Deere until I bought that Kubota. Bought it used with 300 hrs for $9000 as it sets in the first photo. It outmowed every John Deere I ever owned. Great quality cut, very little scalping. Deck ran on the ground.

After my fire I thought I wanted something a little smaller to mow with. The JD2210 is a nice unit, but won't hold a candle to that Kubota. Should have went back with another B model Kubota. I mow 3 acres including 1/2 mile of highway roadside.

I had a chance to buy a B2910 with 250 hours and a Woods frame-mounted backhoe on it for a pretty good price. I'm still kicking myself for not buying it.

I'm still looking for another one. I'd trade my JD2210 for one without hesitation.

I know that there is a fine line between SCUT and CUT but I wouldn't call a B2910 a SCUT, it is in the first range of CUT's in size. A BX Kubota of any number is a SCUT. Your JD 2210 is a SCUT which is one reason that it doesn't compare to the B2910. HP is not the deciding factor in what makes a SCUT, more frame size. I like the think of SCUT as a glorified lawn mower that can handle a small lift capacity FEL, it may have more HP than a small CUT but still wont do the work of a CUT with less HP. Extra HP is only good for PTO jobs and all SCUT, CUT and even some Utility tractors will run out of traction long before they run out of power.

Yep - SCUT's are great for mowing, esp. if you have some slopes & most of your run time is for mowing. I went SCUT instead of CUT for that reason with 3 acres, plus I can still do light landscaping & brush cleanup, so a SCUT is perfect for me out in the country/xurban area.

For those with larger areas, obviously a SCUT is insufficient and you will see many of members with serious CUT's and smaller L&G mowers. Someday...................:licking:

Gary, I agree with you.... But John Deere doesn't. They called the JD2210 a CUT when it came out. It's not.

It's durable and very capable for it's size. Weighs 1400lb bare tractor. CAT I limited 3pt. Plays with a 62" deck mmm. Pulls a 5ft box blade. Pushes snow with a 54" front blade very easily.

Where it lacks is features. No position control 3pt. No tilt wheel. No suspension seat. Poorer quality mowing.

I get the size difference and don't hold that against it. Just doesn't start to compare to the features of the B2910 and especially the quality of cut when mowing.

With those slopes, COG would be foremost in my decision. And I think a GT wins that one, except for maybe the ventracs and steiners. 4WD is a must, but don't underestimate the damage that scuffing can cause. This is where the hydraulic, variable speed FWD helps. You can widen the stance some using spacers on just about all of them. Might even be able to double up the wheels on some SCUTs.

Also, on a SCUT, you could also get a small flail mower or rear finish mower to help with banks. Here you'd back the mower in, keeping the tractor as far up the hill as possible. Be careful around that pond.

But, you really have to go drive them to understand their differences.

You could get a SCUT and a sickle bar mower for the pond and ditch.

Sorry for the delay, but I've had limited Internet access as I set up the new house. I wanted to post an update to my saga though...

I headed south Thursday to check out the Deere and Kubota dealers down that way. The Deere dealer had three 1025Rs on their lot and no X700s or even X500s--just a couple of X300s. The sales guy also wasn't there, so I didn't really get to talk to anyone about them. They did seem pretty nice though (but I don't know about the price).

On my way down, I found another dealer a bit closer to me that carries Mahindra and CubCadet/Yanmar tractors as well as Cub Cadet and Deere lawn tractors (?). He didn't have any X500s, but he did have one X700 and one X758. I didn't get to drive either of them though because they were packed in the shop. He quoted me a reasonable price for the X700, but the X758 was a bit ridiculous. Without the 4WD, is the X700 any better than an X500? The only benefit I see here is the locking differential. The dealer also had a Mahindra "SCUT", but it was bigger/heavier than I want to consider.

I finally got to the Kubota dealer and tried out a BX2370. Now that was a fun machine! Unfortunately his didn't have a mower deck, or FEL (or even the FEL valve). The price was also pretty high and the condition was also a bit disappointing. It had lots of peeling stickers and the plastic was pretty faded and sun damaged. I assume it has been on the lot for a while. That's no big deal--but not for the price they offered.

The next day however, I discovered a little lawn shop near my house that to my surprise had a Kubota BX1870 with an FEL. I went by to see it on Saturday, but unfortunately they had it loaded on a trailer and wrapped in Christmas lights to be in a parade that evening. I did get a price quote though that was pretty good. They were going to add a 54" mower deck for me. The only negative was that it was equipped with Ag tires which I'm sure that would destroy my grass. I'm hoping to try looking at it again tomorrow. I suspect they'd be able to swap the wheels out with turf tires.

There's another Kubota dealer an hour west of me. They supposedly have a BX1870 and a BX2370. I've asked them for details/price, but I haven't heard back from them.

Decisions... decisions...

Sounds like you still need to drive a lot more tractors. You should do this before deciding, as all of them are nice and will impress you until you have some seat time to compare to.

One thought on Mahindra, I'd go for a MAX25 before I would a BX. But, that's my preference.

I think the X7xx's with the locking diff. have a beefier rear end than those without. For your needs, the locking diff would be essential (and maybe not even adequate by itself).

It sound like you need to figure out if you want/ need a garden tractor or a tractor. Then figure out what machine you want. After you know what you want check around at all the local dealer (atleast 3) for the best price.

The X700 is a beefier machine than a X500.

The MAX is bigger than a BX:banghead:
