I get the cups and bags and beer bottles occasionally. Someone is getting new furniture though because I've had two couches dumped, several mattresses, etc. I've only been lucky to find a name and or address once but 9 times out of 10 the stuff is untraceable. There's a recycling center not 4 miles from my house and you'll see stuff all over the side of the road. I'm not sure if the recycling center is making the dumping worse or what. Friend of mine owns a lot of land across town and doesn't have this problem at all and he has more public dirt roads running through his land than I do! Oh the joys of being a property owner.....

For whatever reason - I've found that slobs are not isolated to any one area. When I worked for the Health Dept in Anchorage we would send inspectors out a couple times a year to check "favorite" locations where people would dump their garbage.

They would actually dig thru the garbage and find mail, etc with names & addresses. We would send registered letter to these folks giving them a specific amount of time to clean up the mess. In the absence of any action on the part of the "offenders" we would have the Public Works Dept go out with front end loaders & dump trucks and clean up the spots. We would then go to court and obtain the necessary court orders to assess ALL costs back against the property of those identified.

I found that the favored defense, in court, was the "offenders" would say - "Why, somebody must have stolen my garbage and dumped it out there".

I distinctly remember one case where the presiding judge lapsed into such a laughing jag that he had to call a 15 minuet recess to regain his composure.

If there is a garbage service available, this wouldnt fly as who is to say it wasnt the service dumping it to avoid dumping fees?

It seems like once a trash pile/dumping gets started, it becomes a "habit" and others may join in. Has anyone tried cleaning it up the first time and leaving a friendly sign in that spot that states "no dumping- smile, you are on camera"? The camera comment could even be a bluff.

I have no trespassing signs posed all over, doesn't do any good. I need to get the road blocked off but that's an uphill battle.

I am getting all kinds of ideas from you folks. Even though I have free dumping at the city dumps after the mandatory yearly fee I decided not to go there. I took the burn leavings from my garbage burn barrel and dumped it in the corner of my property on my brush pile. Ashes and a few tin cans will disappear in a year after the rain anyway. Saves me a trip to the dumps.

I live on a road with few houses. It is not a dead end because it does connect to a road at each end. The traffic on it always amazes me. Way more than it should be for the houses on the road. No dumping per se. Littering out the windows. People throwing out their drink cups and the like. Pisses me off.

Same in our area. It's not remote by any means, but if you're there, it's probably not an accident. We are on a county road about 2-1/2 miles off any main road or state highway, so it's not a reasonable cut-through to anywhere. We don't have any serious dumping issues, but the amount of window-tossing garbage (cans, bottles, cups, food bags) I pull out of the ditch along the side of the road every week is definitely unacceptable. I've never understood the mindset that makes that seem like an OK thing to do.

What most galls me is the illegal dumpers around me that find the steepest drop-off from the road and heave their disgusting crap over the side and down into the ravine. Tires, washers/dryers, TVs, etc., that will never degrade. And it is too steep to get down to the mess to clean it up (or attempt to identify the bass holes) without technical climbing gear.

Gall #2 is the used hypodermic needles and condoms on any less steep pull-offs.

You should see the trash that ends up on or public land. People take old appliances, TV's, etc and go shoot them up and leave them. Beer cans everywhere.
