I won! Quite a workout for me and the CK20 but that bugger is finally out of the ground. Not sure how I am going to get it to my dump area, as I don't think I will be able to lift it with the loader, but I'll figure something out. All the roots were cut with the backhoe, just catching the outside tooth on them and curling, worked very well. On to the next one

The first thing you need to do is get that sucker OUT of the hole. I dug out one much bigger than that in about 90 min, then it toOk me 3 hrs to get it out of the hole. I couldn't push ,pull , drag or lift it with the CK20 and Rhino hoe. It was in a back yard, near a fence and garage , no room to work on one side, no way to get a bigger macine in the yard. NOW WHAT DO I DO ?

I finally tried digging dirt out of roots then washing out dirt with hose. Then I kept rocking stump back and forth with hoe, prop it up back fill under it with dirt and slowly refilled the hole and worked the stump up to ground level. then ROLLED stump with loader to lower part of yard. The owner then washed more dirt out and cut of roots etc and cut up stump into manageable pieces, then I came back and carried out to the street for the town to pick up.

You may just wash out dirt and then roll stump to your dump site.

( other option is roll it to a good spot away from buildings etc, surround with rocks, soak with diesel for a couple weeks, then have have one **** of a bonfire , of course accompanied by food and drink. There you have it , STUMP GONE, GREAT PARTY ,AND NEW FIRE PIT, LIFE IS GOOD !!!!)

digging out stumps is the quickest way to ruin a tractor , I would employ a stump grinder/ with operator and use your FEL to clear the debris...

Why do you say that, because of the backhoe stress or what? I'm new at tractoring and have never done a stump.

A backhoe is designed to dig soil, a FEL is designed for lifting and loading, i've been in the tree biz for near on 20 years, IMO it seems that a small backhoe is put under to much stress digging out stumps..

The thread starter said it took him 5 hours to get this stump out, 5 hours imo of way too much stress, now a tracked backhoe of over 7 tons is different story, just one other thing most forestry ground/stump clearence gangs use 20 ton+ backhoes and trade them in every 3 years, and all or most tree services use a stump grinder..

I'm not saying a small stump of around 10'' max will hurt your backhoe, but I wouldn't use a small tractor hoe on stumps any bigger or that often, even then i'd be inclined to get a proper root ripper bucket made up..

Here is a pic of a ripper tooth top pic , also read what it says about stress.

Congratulations!!!

Looks like a pretty massive stump!!! I know that when you start on them, it's hard to believe how hard it can be, or how long it takes, but
if you stick with it, they always come out!!!

Thanks for the pictures,
Eddie
Yep even if you have to dig a basement around them .
That will difenately get it out of the ground - then all you need to figure out is how to clean out the basement.

It took me 3 days to dig out a 6 or 8 inch tree when I got my BX23.
I had never used a BH before.
In the last 3 years I'v gotten a little faster with the BH; so I think I could probably do it in about 70 hours now. ;)
Not sure about that though as I'm still practicing on the 10'' tree.:D

I've decided from what I could find on stump buckets here in the forum that they aren't very useful for pine stumps in this red clay type SC soil I have to work with. I can't buy a backhoe (at least for now). And it seems that the stumps put a lot of stress on a CUT anyways, so I have a choice to hire someone or buy a stump grinder. Those pines seem to have about as much tap root going down as they have going up...and they are tall rascals :D

Iv'e got at good many (and more to come) 8-10 inch pine tree stumps to get out (or grind). Are the stump grinders that would go on a 55hp Kioti worth getting? Any brand recommendations? Thanks.

I just searched on ebay for stump grinders for tractors and they were in the $4800 range. A lot more than I thought...that could narrow my decision down

I had the same problem a couple months back and it took at least five hours to break it loose. Then I realized that I had an even bigger problem pulling it out of the hole.
So I started a thread and got a lot of good suggestions. The best of them were:
Dig a ramp and use chains to drag it out.
Use a power washer to remove a lot of dirt. The rootball looked like a cubic yard and I figured 800 to 1200 pounds. Later I discovered that I was looking at maybe 2500 pounds. I used a power washer with a zero degree nozzle and the dirt just melted right off. But the washed off mud just grabbed a hold of the base of the rootball. So I moved it around in the hole and washed again. Boy did I ever get dirty. Make sure you're wearing a faceplate and a rag covering your hair if you try this.
When I moved as much dirt as I could, I just grabbed it with the bh bucket and dragged it out of the hole. On the third try it worked.
With the ball out, I found that there was still a lot of dirt that would make it difficult to burn it.
